    • A power booster includes a housing with a rear housing section and a front housing section defining an internal cavity. A housing wall separates the internal cavity into a first chamber and a second chamber with an opening formed in the housing wall, wherein it is desirable to extend a component through the opening. A tube has an end secured in the opening in the housing wall. The tube's end includes a radially directed wall extending from the end of the tube that extends to an axially extending wall positioned concentrically with the tube and terminating with an outwardly turned segment. The axially extending wall is positioned within the opening in the housing wall with a seal positioned between the axially extending wall and the housing wall wherein the distance between the front housing section and the rear housing section is minimized, by extending the component through the tube.

    • A brake apply system includes a power booster in which, when released and at-rest, a leg of a stop engages a clip and an extension of a valve body engages the clip so that an annular rib of the valve body is axially spaced away from the stop by a distance G. At the same time, a first valve seat is engaged with a first annular valve element closing a pressure supply conduit off from a variable pressure chamber and a second valve seat is spaced away from a second annular valve element by a distance T, opening the variable pressure chamber to an atmospheric pressure chamber. When the power booster is applied, the second valve seat moves the distance T and engages the second annular valve element closing the variable pressure chamber off from the atmospheric pressure chamber and the first valve seat separates from the first annular valve element opening the pressure supply conduit to the variable pressure chamber. The stop moves against the annular rib of the valve body so that when the pushrod is initially released the second annular valve element moves away from the second valve seat a distance equal to G+T. A pressurized air supply communicates with the power booster and includes a compressor and a dryer. When the compressor is turned off a solenoid valve opens and a quantity of dry air contained in a regeneration reservoir passes through the dryer, regenerating the dryer.

    • A brake booster provides additional boost capacity without unduly increasing booster size and weight by providing a vacuum pump connected so as to add its additional vacuum capacity to that of the normal vacuum source when activated in response to sensed approaching run-out. The additional vacuum is provided by connecting the vacuum pump in a second conduit between the vacuum source and the booster vacuum chamber in parallel with a first conduit connecting the vacuum source directly with the booster vacuum chamber, with check valve means in the first and second conduits preventing substantial vacuum loss from the vacuum chamber. Approaching run-out is signaled by a sensor responsive to a vacuum level in the working chamber; and control means are responsive to a predetermined low value of the sensed vacuum level in the working chamber to activate the vacuum pump and thus increase the vacuum level in the vacuum chamber over that produced by the vacuum source, whereby a greater pressure differential is available across the booster diaphragm before run-out is encountered. An optional sensor responsive to vacuum level in the vacuum chamber enables the vacuum pump to be additionally used for backup of the vacuum source while still providing the functionality of the invention in most cases. The venting of the vacuum pump to the vacuum source reduces released noise which might otherwise require bulky noise filter apparatus.

    • A vacuum booster includes a housing defining a control volume in which a movable diaphragm separates the control volume into an apply chamber and a vacuum chamber. A power piston extends through and engages the diaphragm and has an axial bore containing a valve assembly that controls a diaphragm pressure differential across the diaphragm. The power piston drives an output rod in the forward direction. The output rod has a rearward portion exposed to pressure within the vacuum chamber and a forward face exposed to atmospheric pressure. When the pressure within vacuum chamber is less than atmospheric, a piston pressure differential across the power piston provides a return force in the rearward direction to the power piston.

    • A vacuum brake booster provides a braking speed of application enhancement by increasing the air valve opening when a vehicle operator applies braking force quickly and forcefully. This is accomplished with a two part air valve which is normally expanded axially to a normal length by an internal spring but which may be shortened to open the air valve by a greater amount when the brake pedal input force is sufficient to move the air valve axially against another spring into contact with a shoulder of the power piston. The internal spring has a much higher preload than the other spring so that the booster operates with a fully axially expanded air valve in normal, low force brake activation. Once the air valve axially engages the power piston, however, the increase in air valve opening is immediate and substantial with any further increase in braking force. The air valve has an air valve input element having a pin projecting radially outward into an opening in a side wall of an air valve output element surrounding the air valve input element so as to axially engage a side of the opening to limit expansion of the air valve by the spring and thus define the normal axial length of the air valve.
