    • A tissue treatment system has a radio frequency generator and a handheld treatment instrument that generates a gas plasma jet for delivering thermal energy to a tissue surface to be treated. Incorporated in the housing for the generator is a calibration device for adjusting the energy output of the generator, if necessary, at the beginning of a treatment session. The calibration device has a target element with a target surface, a transducer for sensing changes in temperature of the target element with respect to the temperature of a reference element, and an energy output adjuster for adjusting the radio frequency energy output of the generator in response to a calibration signal generated by the transducer. The generator housing has a receptacle for locating the nozzle of the handheld instrument in juxtaposition with the target element so that when a plasma burst is generated as part of a calibration sequence it is incident on the target surface. The generator output is automatically adjusted to compensate for any deviation of a calibration value, produced from the calibration signal, from a reference value. Also disclosed is a method of regenerating the reticular architecture of tissue, the method including calibrating the energy delivery of a tissue treatment system.

    • An electrosurgical instrument includes a hand piece, an electrode assembly comprising one or more electrodes attached to the hand piece, and connection means for connecting the hand piece to an electrosurgical generator. The hand piece comprises a housing, fluid supply lines for directing a cooling fluid to and from the electrode assembly, and a pump for driving cooling fluid through the fluid supply lines. An electrosurgical cutting blade comprises a first electrode, a second electrode, and an electrical insulator separating the first and second electrodes. The first and second electrode have dissimilar characteristics, such that the first electrode is encouraged to become an active electrode and the second electrode is encouraged to become a return electrode. In use, a thermal differential is established between the first and second electrodes, either by thermally insulating the second electrode from the first electrode, and/or by transferring heat away from the second electrode.

    • An electrosurgical system includes a generator for generating radio frequency (RF) power, and an electrosurgical instrument including at least three electrodes. The generator comprises an RF output stage having at least a pair of RF output lines, a power supply coupled to the output stage for supplying power to the output stage, and a controller capable of varying the RF power signal supplied to the output lines. The system also includes a selection circuit having at least three output connections each in electrical connection with a respective one of the at least three electrodes. This selection circuit operates to vary the coupling between the RF output stage and the three or more output connections. A switching device operable by the user causes the selection circuit to vary the electrode or electrodes to which RF power is supplied, and also causes the RF power signal supplied to at least one of the at least three output connections to vary depending on the electrode or electrodes to which RF power is supplied. In one arrangement of the selection circuit, one of the electrodes has no direct connection to the output stage of the generator and is connected via a capacitor to another of the electrodes.

    • An apparatus, system, and method for treating body tissue using controlled application of heat includes a control unit providing electrical power to a bipolar electrode positioned within an expandable member filled with conductive fluid. Electrical power applied to the bipolar electrode by the control unit causes current to pass from the active electrode, into the conductive fluid, and to the return electrode, thereby heating the conductive fluid. The temperature of the conductive fluid is monitored by the control unit, and power is increased and decreased in accordance with a comparison of the monitored temperature against the desired temperature range. The control unit also includes a pressure sensor for regulating the pressure in the bladder. Pressure and temperature displays and other operator controls are located on the control unit.

    • An electrosurgical system includes a generator for generating radio frequency power, and an electrosurgical instrument including at least three electrodes and. The generator includes a radio frequency output stage having at least a pair of RF output lines, and a power supply coupled to the output stage for supplying power to the output stage. A controller is operable to limit the radio frequency output voltage developed across the output lines to at least a first predetermined threshold value to produce a cutting RF waveform, and a second threshold value to produce a coagulating RF waveform. In a combined mode, the controller delivers both cutting and coagulating waveforms, either simultaneously or by alternating constantly between the first and second threshold values to form a blended signal. The system also includes means for feeding the waveform to the three or more electrodes such that the cutting RF waveform is delivered between a first pair of the electrodes, and the coagulating waveform is delivered between a second pair of the electrodes.
