    • A method of operating a communication system comprises establishing a wireless device release time interval for a wireless device release timer at an access node upon establishing an initial network connection between a wireless device and the access node. An initial synchronization process is performed between the wireless device and the access node. The method continues with the access node sending an unsolicited synchronization message to the wireless device and starting the wireless device release timer. A second synchronization process is performed and upon successful completion of the second synchronization process, a success status synchronization response message is sent by the access node to the wireless device. The access node receives a synchronization confirmation message from the wireless device that comprises an identifier corresponding to the identity of the wireless device and upon receiving the confirmation message, the access node cancels the wireless device release timer.

    • A method of operating a communication system comprises performing a plurality of ranging processes to establish a network connection over a wireless link.     • A method of operating a communication system comprises exchanging initial communications between a wireless communication device and a communication network over a wireless connection between the wireless communication device and a network access system and a network connection between the wireless communication device and the communication network. The method further comprises performing a plurality of ranging processes to monitor a status of the wireless connection. Upon successfully completing a ranging process of the plurality of ranging processes, the method comprises determining a duration elapsed since the last successful ranging process and processing the duration to determine if the duration satisfies a criteria. The method further comprises, if the duration does not satisfy the criteria, then setting the indicator to indicate that a partial entry process is required to regain the network connection, and in response to the deterioration of the wireless link, processing the indicator to determine if the partial network entry process is required to regain the network connection.

    • Systems and methods for performing handover cancellation in a wireless communication system are provided. According to an aspect of the invention, a mobile station requests bandwidth from a serving base station for the mobile station to send a handover cancellation request message to the serving base station. The mobile station then receives an allocation of the requested bandwidth from the serving base station, and sends the handover cancellation request message to the serving base station via the allocated bandwidth. The mobile station requests the bandwidth after a disconnect time and before a resource retain time.

    • An apparatus and method of configuring a number of retransmissions for an automatic repeat request (ARQ) scheme (e.g., hybrid ARQ) includes configuring one or more first maximum retransmission numbers based on respective one or more first predetermined values and independent of a second maximum retransmission number. The first maximum retransmission numbers may indicate a maximum number of retransmissions related to respective service flows operational with the base station. The second maximum retransmission number may indicate a maximum number of retransmissions related to control messages transmitted in the wireless network, and may be configured based on a second predetermined value. The configuration of the first maximum retransmission numbers may include the maximum retransmissions numbers associated with a specific user in communication with the base station. Further, at least one of the first maximum retransmission numbers of a particular user may be reconfigured to a third predetermined value.
