    • A method and an apparatus are provided for adaptively improving an image quality of current images to be coded by reducing effects due to pulsing artifacts. The video coding method is intended for coding a video on a per predetermined block basis using one or more predetermined quantization control variables. The method includes calculating a correlation degree indicating a correlation between an original block in a current original picture to be coded and a prediction block in a previous uncompressed picture, and includes changing a first predetermined quantization control variable to a second predetermined quantization control variable, so as to reduce a quantization step size when the correlation degree is greater than a predetermined threshold. The method also includes determining the quantization step size based on the second quantization control variable, and coding the original block based on the determined quantization step size using a predetermined image coding tool.

    • A video decoding apparatus which decodes a bitstream on an area-by-area basis. The area is included in a picture of an interlace format. The bitstream is coded by switching coding types between field coding and frame coding. The apparatus includes: a filter processing unit which performs post filtering for removing noise; a coding type identifying unit which identifies the coding type of a current area and further identifies the coding type of either the area contained in a picture temporally continuous to the current picture and colocated with the current area or the area spatially adjacent to the current area; and a noise removing strength determination unit which determines strength for removing noise according to whether the identified coding type is the frame coding or the field coding. The processing unit performs post filtering on the current area according to the noise removing strength.

    • An ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus according to the present invention sends out an ultrasonic wave toward a subject and receives the ultrasonic wave reflected from the subject, thereby generating the subject's tomographic image. The apparatus includes: a receiving section 214 for generating a number of received signals, which belong to the same acoustic line but which have mutually different reception sensitivities, based on a detection signal that has been obtained by detecting the ultrasonic reflected wave that has returned from the subject; a synthesis processing section 206 for classifying segments on the acoustic line according to the intensity of the ultrasonic reflected wave, thereby making a synthetic received signal out of the received signals based on a result of the classification; and an image generating section 207 for generating the subject's tomographic image by using either grayscales or color tones based on the signal intensity of the synthetic received signal.
