    • A sheet registration system in an arcuate sheet path of a compact printer with a sheet feeding system in which the lead edge of the sheet is partially arcuately buckled against a transversely extending registration gate in said sheet path (such as stalled or slower speed sheet feed roller nips, or retractable fingers) in which there is a transversely variable arcuate control baffle system in said sheet path upstream of the registration gate for accommodating skewed sheets in the sheet path and thereby providing improved alignment of the lead edge of the skewed sheets with the transversely extending registration gate. The illustrated transversely variable arcuate control baffle system is provided by a variably positionable split baffle system providing for a larger arcuate buckle for one side of a skewed sheet than the other side of the skewed sheet. This may be in proportion to a sensed initial skew of the sheet.

    • A single revolution clutch with an auto-home feature. This feature, added to the single revolution clutch, provides a mechanical home position stop. It utilizes the motion of the case to accomplish this. Whenever the clutch is energized, the case is pulled in, or the 1 mm gap is closed. The control ring has an additional single home detent on the opposite side to the one or more detents normally found on the single revolution clutch. The case has a tab feature, which can be punched out of the case itself, or can be tacked on as an additional piece of metal or plastic. This tab feature, seen as an "L" shape from the side, will move with the case. When the case is energized and closes its 1 mm gap, the normal detents on both the control ring and the case, spin free of each other. However, the "L" tab now moves closer to the single home tab on the other side of the control ring, and locks the control ring within one revolution of rotation or less. In this manner, the home position of the shaft is automatically located. When the case is released when the clutch is de-energized, the case moves out and the control ring rotates until the nearest detent locks with the normal detent on the case. The clutch continues operation in the normal manner, ie. pulsing periodically to move to the next shaft position, and so on.

    • A sheet aligning and registration device for a printing machine. In a stalled roll registration device there is provided a drive mechanism preceding the stalled roll and a sensor to determine the size of a buckle formed in a sheet as it is fed into the registration nip formed by the stalled roll pair. When the buckle reaches a predetermined size the sensor generates a signal which causes the drive controller to briefly pulse the registration roll pair. This brief pulse of the registration roll pair captures the sheet in the nip in a deskewed and registered position for subsequent feeding in a timed relationship to a machine subsystem. A baffle located between the drive nip and registration nip directs the sheet buckle formation in a controlled manner so that proper deskewing and registration forces are obtained.
