摘要： Non-aqueous electrorheological fluids are described which comprise a major amount of a hydrophobic liquid phase and a minor amount of a dispersed particulate phase comprising conductive polymers selected from the group consisting of polypyrroles, polyphenylenes, polyacetylenes, polyvinylpyridines, polyvinylpyrrolidones, poly(substituted anilines), polyvinylidene halides, polyphenothiazines and polyimidazoles. The electrorheological fluids prepared in accordance with the present invention are useful in a variety of applications including flotational coupling devices such as clutches for automobiles or industrial motors, transmissions, brakes or tension control devices; and linear damping devices such as shock absorbers, engine mounts and hydraulic actuators.

摘要： Hydroxy aromatic compositions containing (a) a hydroxyl group bonded directly to a carbon of an aromatic nucleus, (b) a hydrocarbon-based substituent of at least about 50 aliphatic carbon atoms bonded directly to a carbon atom of an aromatic nucleus, (c) at least one methylol or lower hydrocarbyl substituted methylol substituent bonded directly to a carbon atom of an aromatic nucleus, and not having any alkylene linkages between carbon atoms of two aromatic nuclei are useful as additives for normally liquid fuels and lubricating oils. These hydroxy aromatic compositions are also useful as intermediates for preparing other additives for fuels and lubricants. Typical hydroxy aromatic compositions of the present invention are formed by reaction of formaldehyde with an alkenyl- or alkyl-substituted phenol wherein the alkyl or alkenyl substituent contains an average of about 50 carbon atoms.

Similarly useful post-treated products can be made from these condensation products by further reaction with alcohols, amines, metal salts or metals.

摘要： A nitrogen-containing ester of a carboxy-containing interpolymer which is particularly useful as a pour point depressant is disclosed. The interpolymer has a reduced specific viscosity of from about 0.05 to about 1 and is derived from at least two monomers, one of said monomers being a low molecular weight aliphatic olefin or styrene and the other of said monomers being an alpha, beta-unsaturated aliphatic acid, anhydride or ester thereof. The nitrogen-containing ester is substantially free of titratable acidity and is characterized by the presence within its polymeric structure of at least one of each of the following groups which are derived from the carboxy groups of said interpolymer:(A) a carboxylic ester group, said carboxylic ester group having at least eight aliphatic carbon atoms in the ester radical, and(B) a carbonyl-polyamino group derived from a polyamino compound having one primary or secondary amino group and at least one monofunctional amino group,wherein the molar ratio of carboxy groups of said interpolymer esterified to provide (A) to carboxy groups of said interpolymer neutralized to provide (B) is in the range of about 85:15 to about 99:1. Lubricant compositions and additive concentrates comprising the foregoing nitrogen-containing ester as well as a process for making such ester are also disclosed.

摘要： Condensation products made by reacting an .alpha.-hydroxyalkyl hydroxy-aromatic compound also having at least one non-fused hydrocarbyl substituent with at least one olefinic nitrile, carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid derivative are useful as additives for fuels and lubricants. The total number of carbon atoms in the non-fused hydrocarbyl substituents is at least about 7 while the .alpha.hydroxyalkyl group contains from 1 to about 36 carbons and the olefinic acid or nitrile reactant usually contains 2 to about 40 carbon atoms. Products made from hydroxymethyl alkyl-substituted phenols and .alpha.,.beta.-olefinic acid derivatives such as maleic anhydride and particularly useful. Similarly useful post-treated products can be made from these condensation products by further reaction with alcohols, amines, metal salts or metals.
