    • A solid-state light source 10 compatible with existing sockets normally reserved for filamented lamps may be formed with a hollow base 12 formed to mechanically and electrically adapt to a socket. A sub-assembly 14 adapted to cooperate with and fit into the hollow base 12 comprises a metal core 16 having a bulbous body 18 and a narrow, depending foot 20. A circuit board 22 substantially surrounds the metal core 16 on two sides. The board 22 is preferably formed from a flexible printed circuit board material capable of sustaining a bend radius of at least 0.25 inches (6 mm). Solid-state light sources 30, for example, light emitting diodes (LEDs) are mechanically and electrically connected to one side of the circuit board by suitable electrically conductive traces. A glass dome 34 covers the sub-assembly 14 after it is inserted into the hollow base 12 and is sealed thereto.

A hollow body (20) projects from the housing (12) and is symmetrically arrayed about the longitudinal axis (18). A light guide (21) is positioned in the hollow body (20) and as a single output end (22) arrayed along the longitudinal axis (18) and has a plurality of radially extending arms (23), each of the arms having an input end (24). The light guide (21) is preferably constructed from a molded acrylic or a suitable glass having wave-guide characteristics.

    • An LED lamp (10) having a substantially concave heat sink (12) having a raised, frusto-conical center (14) surrounded by an outer rim (16). The heat sink (12) is preferably aluminum or other metal and at least the frusto-conical center preferably has a reflective coating. To further aid in heat removal the outer rim (16) can be provided with a plurality of apertures (16a). A side-emitting LED (18) is mounted on the frusto-conical center (14). A cover (26) is fixed to the outer surface (22) and defines a volume (28) between the frusto-conical center (14) and the cover (26). A circuit (30) is located within the volume (28) and an electrical connection (32) provides connection to the LED (18). In another embodiment a cover (26a) is provided with studs (54) and a reflector (42a) is provided with studs (56) that engage barbs (50) formed in a heat sink (12a).

    • A solid-state light source (10) that is compatible with the existing sockets normally reserved for filamented lamps (100). The solid-state light source (10) comprises a hollow base (12) formed to mechanically and electrically adapt to an existing socket normally reserved for lamps (100). A sub-assembly (14) is adapted to cooperate with and fit into the hollow base (12). The sub-assembly (14) comprises a circuit board (16) with a plurality of solid-state light sources (18) mechanically and electrically connected to one side (20) of the circuit board. Two electrical contacts (22, 24) are positioned on the other side (26) of the circuit board for connection to an electrical circuit. A light pipe (28) covers the plurality of light sources (18) and extends away therefrom to a terminal end (30). A light radiator (34) is affixed to the terminal end (30) and a light-opaque shroud (33) surrounds the light pipe (32) to keep all of the light generated by the solid-state light source within the light pipe (32) to exit out of the light radiator (34).
