    • A method for providing a remote PBX service by a customer's phone service provider. More than one telephone number is assigned top one customer's telephone communication link. The one customer's telephone communication link is in communication with at least one telephone. A connect signal is received by the customer's phone service provider. The connect signal includes one of the telephone numbers assigned top the one customer's telephone communication link. A called telephone code is generated. The called telephone code is indicative of the one of the telephone numbers included in the connect signal. The called telephone code is sent to the customer's telephone communication link whereby a user of the customer's telephone communication link is capable of knowing which of the more than one telephone numbers assigned to the one customer's telephone communication link was called prior to answering the at least one telephone connected to the customer's telephone communication link. Thus, the customer's phone service provider provides the remote PBX service for the customer without the necessity of a local PBX.

    • The present invention contemplates a system whereby a service provider can service a large number of customers (millions) and connect them to their rented PC from millions of locations around the world. Many customers (10 to 100 thousand) can be connected simultaneously. The service provider is responsible for maintaining the latest PC Hardware and Software configurations available on the market instead of the customer. The rented PC operates in essentially the same manner as if one purchased and maintained their PC at home or office. Access to the individuals rented PC can be obtained from any existing PC, office network computer, a Web TV computer or other customer interface computer which has been authorized by the service provider. The current invention will greatly improve existing Client/Server systems being used to service large global offices. However The greatest improvement, is to make the PC much more convenient and easier for the individual to use in the future and shift the PC hardware and software update burden to the service provider.

    • The Automated Data Delivery Systems (ADDS) are two delivery systems designed to either deliver specific data to customer computers over a network, e.g., the Internet, or from one application program to another. In both cases the user computer requesting data delivery can either have a special automatic data reception capability or receive the data without screening. In particular, ADDS are systems that allows a data delivery services to be offered on the Internet or an Intranet between two sites or offered between an Internet site and a User Computer. In addition the ADDS invention includes a modification to existing or future application programs that allow the program to deliver specified data, in the format specified by the user, to the location specified by the user, and at a schedule specified by the user. In the case of Internet delivery the Website might charge a specified price for the delivery service.

    • An improved method and apparatus for automatically monitoring objects, such as vehicles, for example, wherein signpost units are positioned at predetermined locations and each signpost unit transmits a binary signpost code for reception via units installed in the objects being monitored and the objects being monitored receive the signpost codes and store object location information. In one aspect, the present invention contemplates a method and an apparatus which has a multi-mode operation capability wherein the location of the monitored objects is reported when the monitored object enters a different coverage region in an automatic reporting mode, wherein only those monitored objects within a predetermined region or on a predetermined route report to the base station in a region or route reporting mode, and wherein only the locations of predetermined monitored objects are reported to the base station in a polling mode. In another aspect, the present invention contemplates an improved method and an apparatus for locating and operating the signpost units to reduce the total number of signpost units required to cover a given number of locations wherein each signpost unit establishes a uniquely identifiable near-field region and a uniquely identifiable far-field region, the signpost units being located to establish uniquely identifiable overlap regions wherein a portion of the far-field region of at least one of the signpost units overlaps a portion of the far-field region on another signpost unit. The method and apparatus of the present invention also provides a non-polling location technique eliminating the necessity of interrogating the monitored objects at regular intervals and reducing the radio channel time required for reporting object location. Further, the method and apparatus of the present invention contemplates signpost units constructed and operating to intermittently transmit the signpost codes in a manner allowing the use of relatively long life battery type electrical power sources reducing the installation expense, the equipment costs and the maintenance expense.
