    • A circuit for linearizing analog-to-digital output is shown in FIG. 2, with an analog signal V.sub.i transmitted by input circuit 10 is applied to an input port of an analog-to-digital converter 12 controlled by a sampling signal V.sub.s, to provide digital data V.sub.d on an "N" bit data bus 14. An analog-to-digital linearizing memory 16 storing a look-up table of digital values, is coupled to bus 14 to receive the digital data V.sub.d, and to respond to the digital data V.sub.d by providing true linear digital values from the look-up table to digital data processing system DSP 20 via an "N" bit data bus 18. A microprocessor 22 is temporarily coupled between the output port of converter 12 and the input port of memory 16 via bus 14, to serve as a switch between bus 14 and a programming memory 24 containing a table of true linear digital values V.sub.t. A known test signal is applied to input circuit 10, and true linear digital values V.sub.t stored in programming memory 24, are then read into linearizing memory 16 to provide an accurate and reliable relation to a characteristic such as the amplitude of each step of the known test signal over the entire range of the known test signal.

    • A digital communications radio receiver, as for television, digitizes a final intermediate-frequency signal offset from zero frequency no more than a few megahertz. This digitized final I-F signal is passed through an adaptive equalizer before being synchrodyned to baseband in the digital regime, which adaptive equalizer has its weighting coefficients determined by comparing I-F signal as received with possible multipath with ideal I-F signal free from multipath distortion. Decision feedback for adjusting the filtering coefficients of the equalizer is described, which is based on the ideal baseband signal being re-modulated onto final I-F carrier and compared to the received signal as translated in frequency to provide the final I-F signal. A training-signal method for adjusting the filtering coefficients of the equalizer is described, which characterizes the reception channel by comparing prescribed portions of the received signal as translated in frequency to provide the final I-F signal to final I-F signal segments stored at the receiver. Equalization of the final I-F signal based on error signals derived from modulated I-F signal, rather than from demodulated baseband signal, allows different equalization of the upper sideband and the lower sideband of the final I-F signal. This facilitates receiver passband tilts as well as multipath distortion being compensated for.

    • During the reception of VSB DTV signal, the channel equalizer for a QAM/VSB DTV signal receiver the equalizer is operated to equalize only the real sample stream of VSB symbol code, rather than being operated as a complex equalizer. During the reception of QAM DTV signal, the real sample stream of QAM symbol code and the imaginary sample stream of QAM symbol code are time-division-multiplexed together on an alternate sample basis to generate input signal for the channel equalizer, which is operated as a dual-phase filter. After equalization, the time-division-multiplexed real and imaginary samples of QAM symbol code are de-multiplexed to recover parallel real and imaginary sample streams of QAM symbol code that are independent of each other, but have been subjected to similar equalization. Supposing that the QAM DTV symbol code rate is half the VSB DTV symbol code rate, the minimum sampling rate for operation of the channel equalizer is the same for both types of symbol code.

    • An encoder separates luminance and chrominance signal components of a composite video signal. The frame-to-frame changes in the luminance signal are detected, and a motion signal is derived therefrom. The higher frequency portion of the luminance signal is adaptively de-emphasized in amplitude and folded into the spectrum of the lower frequency portion of the luminance signal, to generate a folded-spectrum luminance signal for modulating the frequency of a luma carrier. In a combined signal, suitable for magnetic recording in accordance with a modified VHS standard, the chrominance signal is translated in frequency to generate a color-under signal in a frequency band below that occupied by the FM luma carrier. The de-emphasized higher frequency portion of the luminance signal, as folded into its lower frequency portion, and encoding of the motion signal onto vacant portions of the frequency band below that occupied by the FM luma carrier in such a magnetic recording facilitate its being compatibly reproduced by conventional VHS reproduction devices. In a wideband reproduction device a decoder demodulates the folded-spectrum luminance signal from the FM luma carrier, unfolds the lumininance signal, and reemphasizes the high frequencies of the unfolded luminance signal. The color-under signal is translated in frequency to regenerate chrominance signal combined with the unfolded luminance signal with its high frequencies re-emphasized to their original amplitude, regenerating a composite signal descriptive of a full bandwidth image. The motion signal is utilized in the encoder for motion-adaptively pre-filtering the input luminance and is recovered in the decoder for motion-adaptively post-filtering the unfolded luminance.

    • A first composite video signal may include attendant ghosts and sometimes includes in a prescribed L.sup.th line of each field during the vertical blanking interval one of a cycle of M ghost-canceling reference (GCR) signals of prescribed magnitude and respective phasing. Filter circuitry generates a second composite video signal in response to the first composite video signal, which is adjusted in response to filter programming signals generated by a computer storing a ghost-free GCR signal. The computer receives a GCR signal with attendant ghosts and compares it to the stored ghost-free GCR signal, thereby carrying out correlation procedures for calculating the filter programming signals. The second composite video signal is a response to the first composite video signal in which the attendant ghosts are lessened. Synchronizing pulses are separated from the composite video signals and a scan line counter counts the horizontal synchronizing pulses, generating a line count, and is reset to an initial line count by each vertical synchronizing pulse. An L.sup.th -line separator responds to the line count for separating the scan lines of the second composite video signal that include GCR signals. A field counter counts the vertical synchronizing pulses modulo M, generating a field count synchronized to the cycle of M. GCR signals. A temporal filter combines M.times.N successive scan lines to generate a temporal filter response supplied to the computer as a noise-reduced GCR signal with attendant ghosts.

    • In a radio receiver for receiving vestigial sideband (VSB) signals including symbol codes descriptive of digital signals, HDTV signals being exemplary of such VSB signals, a tuner provides for selecting one of channels at different locations in a frequency band used for transmitting such VSB signals. The tuner also includes mixers for performing plural conversion of the selected channel to a final intermediate-frequency signal, which is digitized by an analog-to-digital converter. A phase tracker, operative on narrow-bandpass filtered portions of the digitized final intermediate frequency signal centering on its carrier frequency, suppresses an imaginary portion of the final intermediate-frequency signal, arising from multipath distortion or from phase incoherency in local oscillations used during frequency conversion. A digital controlled oscillator in the phase tracker supplies digital descriptions of the carrier wave for the final intermediate-frequency signal to a synchronous detector, which synchronous detector detects the real portion of the digitized final intermediate-frequency signal in accordance with those digital descriptions of the carrier wave pair of all-pass digital filters, which exhibit a constant .pi./2 difference in phase response for the digitized bandpass signals and are designed based on Jacobian elliptic functions as described by C. M. Rader, are used in the phase tracker for generating the real and imaginary portions of the digitized final intermediate-frequency signal.
