The damper generally includes a thrust shaft comprising an external threaded surface in threaded communication with a sealed housing, wherein at least one end of the thrust shaft extends from the housing; a plurality of rotors and stators alternatingly arranged in the housing, wherein the plurality of rotors comprise a planar surface with a centrally located aperture that is rotatably engaged with the threaded surface of the thrust shaft, wherein the plurality of stators is fixedly attached to the housing and comprises a centrally located aperture dimensioned to accommodate vertical movement of the thrust shaft and a planar surface substantially parallel to the planar surface of the at least one rotor, and wherein alternating stators comprises a permanent magnet or an electromagnet; and a magnetorheological fluid disposed in a space defined by the plurality of rotors and stators.

    • An improved magnetorheological fluid damper is provided which more closely approximates ideal performance requirements including increased turn-up ratio and stiction free performance near zero velocity for realistic automotive applications. The MR damper includes a magnetic flux leakage reduction device positioned at each end of the magnetic damper piston assembly to create a magnetic flux isolation barrier causing magnetic flux to extend through an annular flow gap thereby minimizing flux leakage into other areas such as a piston rod and associated hollow tube. The magnetic flux leakage reduction devices are formed of a non-magnetic material and completely cover a respective adjacent axial face of a piston core. A laminar flow enhancing feature is also provided for enhancing laminar flow and minimizing turbulence in the annular flow gap thereby advantageously reducing the off-state force and increasing the turn-up ratio.

    • An extendible bumper system for a vehicle includes a controller system configured to: determine a distance of travel of a first end of a bumper structure using a signal from a position sensor in a first motor, determine a distance of travel of a second end of the bumper structure using a signal from a position sensor in a second motor, and independently adjust at least one of rotational speed and torque output of rotors in the first and second motors in response to the distances of travel. The rotational speed or torque output of the first and second rotors may be independently adjusted in response to a difference in the distances of travel of the first and second ends of the bumper structure, and the rotational speed or torque output of the first and second rotors may be accelerated or decelerated during predetermined distances of travel. A bumper energy absorber for supporting the bumper structure relative to a vehicle includes an inner tube, outer tube, lead screw, nut and motor. Rotation of the lead screw by the rotor causes translation of the nut along the lead screw for driving at least a portion of the bumper structure between extended and retracted positions.

    • An improved magnetorheological fluid damper is provided which closely approximates ideal performance requirements by providing an increased turn-up ratio and improving the linearity of damping force response. The MR damper includes a plurality of concentric annular flow gaps formed between concentrically mounted flux rings positioned on a piston core. By utilizing multiple flow gaps, the present damper increases the overall magnetorheological damping affect thereby creating a higher damping force and an increased tun-up ratio for a given piston size. Alternatively, the present multiple flow gap design permits a given damping force requirement to be achieved with a piston having a significantly reduced length thereby permitting a longer piston stroke. Also, multiple flow gaps permit greater design optimization for controlling damping force linearity.
