    • A web server computer system includes a virus checker and mechanisms for checking e-mails and their attachments, downloaded files, and web sites for possible viruses. The virus checker allows a web server to perform virus checking of different types of information real-time as the information is requested by a web client. In addition, a web client may also request that the server perform virus checking on a particular drive on the web client. If this case, the web server may receive information from the web client drive, scan the information for viruses, and inform the web client whether any viruses were found. In the alternative, the web server may download a client virus checker to the web client and cause the client virus checker to be run on the web client. The preferred embodiments thus eliminate the need for virus checking software to be installed on each web client.

    • An apparatus and method define one or more events that run a Java script when a web page is bookmarked. In the preferred embodiments, a browser determines whether a requested web page was requested from a bookmark, whether the requested page is currently bookmarked, and whether the requested page is the browser's home page. This information is sent along with the page request so the web server can take appropriate action based on this information. One or more events are defined that each run a corresponding Java script to indicate when a page was loaded from a bookmark, when a page is bookmarked, when a page is not bookmarked, and when a page is the home page of the browser. The preferred embodiments allow bookmark information to be communicated to a web server, which can then use the bookmark information in a variety of ways. One preferable way to use the bookmark information is to vary the presentation of the web page depending on whether the page is bookmarked or not.

    • When a search is made for information on the Internet, certain search parameters are saved in the user's system. If a subsequent related search is made, these search parameters are transferred to the internet search engine and used to reorder or otherwise modify the search results. Preferably, every time a search request is made, an entry is added to a cookie, containing the search terms and date of search. The search engine re-orders search results by dividing the results into multiple groups, including (in order of priority: (a) those URLs which are new since the last search; (b) those URLs which have been previously visited by have changed, the magnitude of change determining the ordering within this group; (c) those URLs which existed before the previous search, but have not been visited by the user; and (d) those URL's which the user has previously visited and have not changed. In the preferred embodiment, the user may optionally manually specify certain URLs to be included or excluded. The ordering of search results in accordance with the present invention provides the user with greater control and more meaningful information than current search technology.

    • A method for resolving meeting conflicts for an electronic calendar application is disclosed. After receiving a request for setting a first meeting schedule for a first meeting, an electronic calendar application sets a first meeting schedule and a first meeting priority number associated with the first meeting. In response to a request to set a second meeting schedule for a second meeting, and the second meeting schedule conflicts with the first meeting schedule, the electronic calendar application determines whether a second meeting priority number associated with the second meeting is higher than the first meeting priority number associated with the first meeting. If the second meeting priority number is determined to be higher than the first meeting priority number, then the electronic calendar application overrides the first meeting schedule with the second meeting schedule. Next, the electronic calendar application informs a meeting scheduler of that first meeting that the first meeting has been overridden by the second meeting schedule.

    • A method, article of manufacture, and apparatus for providing browsing information to a user browsing a plurality of network addresses using a browsing program. Specifically, the invention renders first electronic document containing a link that points to a second electronic document, and renders the link in a first, second or third manner. The link is rendered in a first manner if the second electronic document was previously accessed from the first electronic document or a recently accessed electronic document. The link is rendered in a second manner if the second electronic document was previously accessed from another document other than the first electronic document or the recently accessed electronic document. The link is rendered in a third manner if the second electronic document was previously unaccessed.
