    • An improved actuator assembly for a disc drive, the actuator assembly having an E-block which at a proximal end supports an array of read/write heads in reading and writing data relationship to a plurality of spinning data discs which create air currents that convectively cool the E-block, the E-block supporting at a distal end an electrical coil which interacts with a magnet assembly of the disc drive to selectively position the actuator assembly in response to control voltages introduced to the electrical coil. A portion of the control voltage is dissipated as heat energy by the electrical coil, and a heat transfer plate is provided to thermally connect the electrical coil and the E-block to provide conductive heat transfer of the heat energy to the E-block which acts as a heat sink for the electrical coil.

    • Filter racks are disclosed that are adjustable to accommodate filters of various thicknesses. The filter racks may include an insert that can be positioned within the base of the filter rack in two or more positions to adjust the receiving width of the filter rack. A perforated tab of the insert may be unbent to position the insert within the base at a smaller width, and the tab may be bent to position the insert within the base at a larger width. The insert also may include a divider that can be positioned within the base to reduce the width of the filter rack. Further, a rotating guide may be attached to detents within walls of the filter rack compartment. The guide may be biased at various angles to accommodate filters of different widths.

    • A magnetic disc drive includes a base, a disc rotatably attached to said base, and a ramp attached to the base near said disc. The magnetic disc drive also has an actuator assembly pivotably attached to the base. The actuator assembly rotates about an actuator pivot point. The actuator assembly further includes a suspension attached to one end of the actuator assembly, and a transducer attached to the suspension. The actuator assembly moves the transducer between a transducing position and an unload position. The suspension includes a lift tab which contacts the ramp at a contact point as the transducer is moved to the unload position. As the actuator assembly moves the transducer to the unload position, the contact point moves toward the actuator pivot point. This results in a change of the resonant frequency of the actuator assembly. The resonant frequency is lower when the transducer is near the end of the ramp proximate the disc. The ramp can have a straight or a curved lift tab contact path.

    • A disc drive includes a base and a voice coil magnet attached to the base. The voice coil magnet has a first portion for providing a magnetic field having a first direction and magnitude, and a second portion for providing a magnetic field having a second direction and magnitude. The voice coil magnet also has a transition zone between the first portion and the second portion of the voice coil magnet where the magnetic field from the first portion substantially cancels the magnetic field from the second portion of the voice coil magnet. The disc drive also includes an actuator assembly rotatably attached to base. The actuator assembly includes a yoke, and a voice coil attached to the yoke of the actuator. The voice coil is positioned within the magnetic field of the voice coil magnet such that passing a current through the voice coil generates a second magnetic field to position the actuator assembly. A ferromagnetic material is attached to the actuator assembly. The ferromagnetic material is positioned within the magnetic field of the voice coil magnet to induce a force from the magnetic field of the voice coil magnet to drive the actuator to a park position.
