摘要： Java Applets are packaged in a JAR file, including accompanying classes and resources as well as one addition file—a descriptor file. This last file can be read from the JAR file, and scanned to extract an icon to represent the applet on a menu, the applet's name in market applicable languages, applet size and position, and the applets main class name. No further processing need be done to present this applet to the user for selection. The entire applet need not be loaded into memory until the user requests it by using a remote control to select one of the applets represented on the display by a labeled icon. Once the user has selected the application, the applet can be sized and launched without further scanning.

摘要： An exemplary method to help end users configure their respective media playing sets includes prompting the user for their geographical location, transmitting the location to a remote processing site which identifies broadcast settings particularly suited for the location, and adjusting the set remotely from the site to fully implement automatically the settings. Another such method includes establishing a list of viewing categories, identifying preferred broadcast settings for each category, determining preferred categories for previous day/time combinations, predicting most likely to favored categories and settings, and automatically implementing such settings when the corresponding day/time combination is present. Yet another such method includes characterizing a particular program segment by at least one broadcast attribute, determining those broadcast settings most favorable for this segment based on such characterizing, and adjusting the set automatically for the user to implement these most favorable broadcast settings for the segment.

摘要： A Personal Video Recorder (PVR) displays an original, real-time, uncompressed video with no delay during a real-time mode and switches between original video and time shifted video with no delay. This provides a higher fidelity image than using the encoded and then decoded image and provides immediate video change feedback. Additional embodiments of the invention include a PVR that can decode data both from an external storage device and internal buffers; a PVR with a smooth transition when reading data from the external storage device to reading data from a buffer, and vice versa; a PVR that shows true high fidelity real-time video; and a PVR that shows input video transitions in real-time.

摘要： A television upgrade system allows a consumer to upgrade applications or features in a television (TV) simply by inserting an external device containing an upgrade file into the TV. The TV then executes a boot loader code which automatically replaces an executable code for applications or features currently in the TV with the new or upgraded executable code from the upgrade file. A consumer can also upgrade the boot loader code that maps out where the executable code for the different applications or features are located in memory. This allows the TV to be completely reconfigured for a wider variety of new applications and features. A verification operation can be performed to prevent the TV from being reconfigured with incorrect versions of the boot image and to avoid unauthorized files from being loaded into the TV.
