    • Character string recognition and identification is accomplished with a combined, multi-phase top-down and bottom-up process. Characters in an applied signal are recognized with a process that employs a knowledge source which contains information both, about the basic elements in the signal and about strings of the basic elements in the signal. The knowledge source, which may be derived from a training corpus, includes word probabilities, word di-gram probabilities, statisitics that relate the likelihood of words with particular character prefixes, and rewrite suggestions and their costs. Higher level word n-grams, such as word tri-gram probabilities, can also be used. A mechanism is provided for accepting words that are not found in the knowledge base, as well as for rewrite suggestions that are not in the knowledge base.

    • An amplitude leveling circuit includes a variable gain, linear amplifier which receives an input signal and generates an output signal corresponding to the input signal. The signals may be in differential format. A signal processor receives the output signal and determines a corresponding mean squared signal. The signal processor includes a multiplier which squares the output signal, and an averager that averages the squared signal to generate the mean squared signal. An analyzer compares the mean squared signal with a reference and generates a feedback control signal that controls the gain of the variable gain amplifier in accordance with the difference between the mean squared signal and the reference value. The gain of the variable gain amplifier is controlled so that the amplitude of the output signal is maintained at a desired amplitude level without distorting the originally input waveform shape.

    • An improved vacuum sewerage system for transmitting sewage, including at opposite ends a sewage collection tank at atmospheric pressure and a vacuum collection tank under vacuum pressure. The sewage is intermittently injected into a transport conduit under vacuum or subatmospheric pressure when a non-jamming vacuum control valve interposed in the conduit is opened in response to a predetermined pressure condition. The conduit is laid out in a saw-toothed fashion, having a riser, a low point, and a downslope. When no sewage is being transported through the conduit, any residual sewage collects in the low point, which generally does not completely fill with sewage so that vacuum or subatmospheric pressure is communicated throughout the conduit. When the control valve is opened, the sewage transported through the conduit forms a generally hollow cylindrical mass, which is propelled toward the vacuum collection tank. The control valve has a substantially tapered, rigid plunger, and will not jam in the open or semi-open position as a result of repetitive cycling of the valve by an associated control unit. The plunger is mounted at one end of an axially disposed shaft of a piston operator in the valve chamber, and the valve is sealed to prevent leakage of air or liquids. The non-jamming valve is capable of facilitating a flow rate of thirty gallons per minute. The combined vacuum valve and vacuum transport system may be used to convey other types of collected waste liquid, such as used cutting oils.

    • A device for supporting a plastic spectacle frame in a plastic spectacle frame warmer of the type that, in use, retains a primary amount of a solid granular material such as glass beads, in a heating pan and that uses the glass beads as a heat transfer medium, is disclosed. The device comprises a base portion for maintaining the device in a substantially upright relation within the heating pan of the frame warmer. An intermediate portion is supported by the base portion and extends upwardly therefrom. A receptacle portion is supported by the intermediate portion and extends upwardly from the base portion, and is adapted to receive and retain a secondary amount of the glass beads therein above the level of primary amount of the glass beads in the heating pan. There is provided a bridge area receiving means, preferably a pair of opposed vertically displaced slots in the receptacle portion, which slots are adapted to hold the bridge area of the spectacles in supported contacting relation with the secondary amount of glass beads. The secondary amount of glass beads is poured into the interior of the receptacle portion after the plastic frame spectacles have been placed in the slots.
