    • The present invention relates generally to methods usable with handheld devices (e.g., music players or cell phones) and cell phones. One claim recites a cell phone including: an input or interface to receive first content corresponding to audio or video; a media player to render audio or video; an analyzer to derive a plural-bit identifier from portions of the first content representing audio elements of the audio or video picture elements of the video; data indicating at least some capabilities of the media player; and a controller to control: i) communicating the plural-bit identifier and the data indicating the at least some capabilities of the media player to a network resource to obtain enhanced content therefrom, the enhanced content being enhanced relative to the first content, and the enhanced content being associated with the plural-bit identifier and the media player; and ii) obtaining the enhanced content from the network resource. Of course, other claims and combinations are provided as well.

    • Media objects are transformed into active, connected objects via identifiers embedded into them or their containers. In the context of a user's playback experience, a decoding process extracts the identifier from a media object and possibly additional context information and forwards it to a server. The server, in turn, maps the identifier to an action, such as returning metadata, re-directing the request to one or more other servers, requesting information from another server to identify the media object, etc. The server may return a higher fidelity version of content from which the identifier was extracted. In some applications, the higher fidelity version may be substituted for the original media object and rendered to provide higher quality output. The linking process applies to broadcast objects as well as objects transmitted over networks in streaming and compressed file formats.

    • Watermarks and related machine-readable coding techniques are used to embed data within the information content on object surfaces. These techniques may be used as a substitute for (or in combination with) standard machine-readable coding methods such as bar codes, magnetic stripes, etc. As such, the coding techniques extend to many applications, such as linking objects with network resources, retail point of sale applications, object tracking and counting, production control, object sorting, etc. Object message data, including information about the object, machine instructions, or an index, may be hidden in the surface media of the object. An object messaging system includes an embedder and reader. The embedder converts an object message to an object reference, and encodes this reference in a watermarked signal applied to the object. The reader detects the presence of a watermark and decodes the watermark signal to extract the object reference.

    • The present invention relates generally to steganography, digital watermarking and data hiding. In one embodiment a method is provided including: processing data representing content; analyzing the data to determine whether a plural-bit identifier is steganographically encoded therein, the plural-bit identifier encoded in the data through modifications to the data, the modifications steganographically hiding the presence of the plural-bit identifier; and upon detection of the plural-bit identifier, redundantly carrying out an action while attempting to conceal the action from one or more users of the content. Of course, other embodiments are described and claimed as well.
