摘要： A device for interconnecting Local Area Networks (LANs) includes ports for attaching LAN segments and port modules for connecting the ports to a switch fabric. Each of the port modules include a mechanism which searches the Routing Information (RI) field of a Received frame to detect at least two Triplets (a minimum configuration for a LAN segment) indicating a Source path from an originator user and a Destination path to a destination user. The Triplet (single or in combination) is used to access a database (tables) which identifies the Port of Exit (POE) through which the frame is to be routed.

摘要： A method for improving the performance of an existing busoriented computer system with minimum or no design change to the existing hardware, bus protocol, or bus operation is disclosed. Specifically, the present invention improves the effective bandwidth of an existing bus architecture by creating multiple physical instantiations of the existing bus and directing traffic onto these different buses based on the type of bus operation being performed. This results in multiple components having the capability to simultaneously perform bus operations, therefore improving the effective bandwidth of the system. This invention also allows the components which are current being utilized in the existing bus architecture to be re-utilized with minimum additional external logic.

摘要： A LAN interconnect device includes a plurality of Frame Processing Units (FPUs) for coupling each port of the device to a switch fabric. Each one of the Frame Processing Units includes an input section with input logic which prepares LS Headers and appends each one to a block of the frame as the block is forwarded to the switch fabric. The FPU, also, includes an output section with copy logic for copying and assembling frames to be forwarded to devices connected to the port. The copy decision is based upon the LS Header and configuration information in the port.

摘要： A LAN switching system includes an Address Match Control line which can be set (activated) and is monitored by each port adapter card. If a port adapter card recognizes an address on the switch fabric, the adapter card copies the frame with the address and activates the Address match Control line. The set Address Match Control line causes the remaining port adapter cards to stop searching for a match. If the Address Match Control line is not set, the frame can be copied by all port adapters which are configured to do so.

摘要： A technique for triggering a system bus write command with user code includes identifying a specific store-type instruction in a user instruction sequence. The specific store-type instruction is converted into a specific request-type command, which is configured to include core permission controls (that are stored in core configuration registers of a processor core by a trusted kernel) and user created data (stored in a cache memory). Slave devices are configured through register space (that is only accessible by the trusted kernel) with respective slave permission controls. The specific request-type command is then transmitted from the cache memory, via a system bus. In this case, the slave devices that receive the specific request-type command (via the system bus) process the specific request-type command when the core permission controls are the same as the respective slave permission controls.

摘要： Novel data structures, methods and apparatus for finding a full match between a search pattern and a pattern stored in a leaf of the search tree. A key is input, a hash function is performed on the key, a direct table (DT) is accessed, and a tree is walked through pattern search control blocks (PSCBs) until reaching a leaf. The search mechanism uses a set of data structures that can be located in a few registers and regular memory, and then used to build a Patricia tree structure that can be manipulated by a relatively simple hardware macro. Both keys and corresponding information needed for retrieval are stored in the Patricia tree structure. The hash function provides an n->n mapping of the bits of the key to the bits of the hash key. The data structure that is used to store the hash key and the related information in the tree is called a leaf. Each leaf corresponds to a single key that matches exactly with the input key. The leaf contains the key as well as additional information. The length of the leaf is programmable, as is the length of the key. The leaf is stored in random access memory and is implemented as a single memory entry. If the key is located in the direct table then it is called a direct leaf.

摘要： A network device including an ingress processor and egress processor which receives frames of data over the network on an input port, and transfers it to an appropriate output port. The received frame is processed by an ingress processor which prepares an intra-switch frame for delivery to an egress processor serving a relevant output port of the switch. The intra-switch frame includes a frame header having parameters which have been determined by the ingress processor, as well as data indicating an address for the egress processor for beginning processing of the frame. By identifying to the egress processor processing which has already taken place, the egress processor is relieved of any redundant processing of the frame. The egress processor provides a hardware frame classifier which decodes the information contained in the intra-frame header to derive parameters which have been previously computed as well as a starting address for the egress processor. By reducing the amount of redundant processing of the egress processor, total device throughput delay is reduced.
