In one embodiment, a flow control system is coupled between the first tube, the insufflation catheter, and a source of insufflation gas to control the flow of gas between the patient circuit, the insufflation catheter, and the source of insufflation gas. In another embodiment, a ventilator and tracheal gas insufflation system are provided in a common housing.

摘要： An insufflation system that includes a first tube that inserts into a patient's airway for providing a primary flow of breathing gas to such a patient. At least one insufflation catheter is provided in or within the first tube for delivering a flow of insufflation gas to the patient. In one embodiment, the flow of insufflation gas is delivered in a first direction generally toward the patient's lungs and in a second direction generally opposite the first direction so that the flow in the second direction creates a negative stagnation pressure that substantially cancels out the positive stagnation pressure generated by flow in the first direction. In second embodiment, an exhaust vent is provided in the first tube for exhausting a flow of gas from the first tube at a rate that is equivalent to the rate at which the flow of insufflation gas is being delivered to the patient's airway, thereby preventing over-inflation of the patient's respiratory system. A third embodiment of the present invention involves a combination of the two embodiments discussed above.

The device includes a patient circuit coupling a gas source to an airway of a patient, and a valve disposed in the patient circuit. The valve communicates the gas source with the patient's airway when in a first position and at least partially restricts communication when in a second position. A rotating drive assembly rotates the valve in a first direction such that the valve is alternatively disposed in the first and second positions. This system is capable of delivering positive and negative pressures to the airway of a patient by including a blower as the source of breathing gas. This system is also capable of superimposing a high frequency oscillating pressure signal on another pressure signal by adding a second blower in series with the first blower.

When the valve is in a closed position, the path between the source of breathing gas and the patient's airway is at least partially obstructed to create the pressure spikes. An actuating system associated with the valve alternatively places the valve in the open position and in the closed position at a predetermined oscillation rate that is independent of patient effort.

摘要： An oxygen mixing arrangement for or in a pressure support ventilator, in which a modular oxygen-providing assembly is selectively insertable into a greater respiration apparatus. Mixing accuracy and controllability is maintained by using gas supplies that have a wide range of pressures. Further, oxygen leakage is minimized by connecting the modular oxygen-providing assembly at a point of the respiration circuit of the greater respiration apparatus that is downstream from a valving arrangement normally used for venting patient exhaust flow and for controlling system pressure by venting excess gas flow to the ambient atmosphere.

A frequency spectrum is generated for the plethysmograph signal and the frequencies of interest is isolated from the frequency spectrum by setting appropriate cutoff frequencies for the frequency spectrum. This isolated frequency is used to filter the plethysmograph signal to provide a signal indicative of the patient's respiratory activity or cardiac function.
