    • A magazine for the automated changing of printing plates of a sheet-fed offset printing machine. The magazine includes a guiding apparatus which can be put into place on the plate cylinder for purposes of conveying used printing plates out of the plate cylinder and for feeding new printing plates to the cylinder. The guiding apparatus may be formed by a sheet-metal profile. Provision is made of further guiding surfaces and a holder so that the used printing plate may be locked by the holder. An operator then only need pull the plate a short distance out of the gripping region of a leading edge clamping rail. Stops are provided for a printing plate so that the new printing plate can be deposited on the stops. By virtue of putting the guiding apparatus into place, the new printing plate is shifted toward the plate cylinder and can be fed into the front clamping rail by the operator.

    • A method for automatically feeding a printing plate in proper registry to a plate cylinder in a printing machine is disclosed. Pursuant to the disclosed method, a printing plate is advanced by a plate conveyor towards a clamping rail on the plate cylinder. After the leading edge is inserted into the clamping rail, the in-register condition of the leading edge of the printing plate is independently sensed at two sensing sites. If the leading edge of the printing plate is in register at only one site, the printing plate is released from the plate conveyor for a period of time to permit the printing plate to align itself. The printing plate is then held again by the plate conveyor and the advancement of the plate is resumed. This process is repeated until the independent sensors both indicate that registry has been achieved.

    • The invention relates to a method for controlling a machine processing sheet material. The processing machine has at least one printing or coating group and a cylinder that is coupled to a direct drive and is decoupled mechanically from a main drive acting on a gear train of a plurality of sheet transport cylinders and that can be driven in a given way at least relative to the sheet-guiding cylinders. The cylinder having an associated inking group with an inking group roller that can be driven by the main drive and gear train. Printing contact in a contact zone of the cylinder carrying the printing form with an adjacent rubber blanket cylinder is cancelled for cleaning. The inking group roller of the inking group is separated on a drive side from the sheet transport cylinders driven by the main drive and gear train. The inking group roller is coupled on the drive side to the cylinder carrying the printing form. The inking group roller is driven according to a cleaning program stored in a selection menu for an individual cleaning period at an individual rotational speed by the direct drive.

    • A maintenance and diagnostic system for a printing machine, preferably a sheet-fed offset printing machine, includes a control system having at least one computer and is connected to signal transmitters that are sensors and/or limit switches. The main drive and other drives of the printing machine are activated via the sensors and/or limit switches. The control system is operatively connected to a control-desk computer containing data on print jobs that are carried out. The control system is arranged to provide a diagnostic and inspection system for printing machines to be used for planning necessary maintenance work in advance to the greatest possible extent such that the downtimes of the printing machine required for maintenance work are minimized. The control system includes a maintenance and inspection computer which is operatively connected to the control system and to the control-desk computer. Signals can be recorded by the control system onto the maintenance and inspection computer. Also, signals sent by the printing machine drives and the signal transmitters are fed to the maintenance and inspection computer. The maintenance and inspection computer uses such signals to determine the condition of consumable materials, and variables representing the stress on and wear of printing machine components provided, and also to determine the times and the extent of appropriate maintenance measures based on such conditions and variables.

    • A method for eliminating gear train backlash in the drive of a sheet-fed printing machines when changing the printing mode of the machine between face printing and perfecting or vice versa is disclosed. The printing machine has a gear train, a longitudinal drive shaft, and a plurality of input drives connecting the drive shaft to the gear train. At least one separation device is provided in the gear train, and at least one clutch is provided in the drive shaft. Releasing both the clutch and the separation device disconnects the printing machine into decoupled regions. After the relative position of those regions are adjusted for the new printing format, the new relative position is fixed by engaging the separation device. The segments of the longitudinal drive shaft is then adjusted to apply a torque to the gear train to eliminate backlash in the drive. The positioning can optionally be performed by the main drive motor or a separate positioning drive connected to the drive shaft.
