    • This disclosure relates to a communication system including a modulator and a demodulator. The modulator produces a modulated signal including a carrier and data signals representing data bits. The data signals include at least two in-phase modulating pulses which have different shapes and which are interfering in time and frequency; the data signals further include at least two quadrature modulating pulses which have different shapes and which are interfering in time and frequency. The modulator includes a filter for producing each shape of pulse, and combining circuits for combining the pulses with each other and with a carrier. The demodulator (or receiver) receives the combined signal and separates the pulses from the carrier. The demodulator further includes filters for separating the pulses, and a circuit for processing the pulses to reproduce the data bits. The processing circuit preferably includes one or more maximum likelihood sequence estimation equalizers.

    • Systems and methods for interference cancellation for high spectral efficiency satellite communications enabling efficient utilization of available bandwidth through overlapping adjacent channels. Data information is received along with noise information, and a filter bank is adapted to receive and filter the waveform and output channel information including a combination of data signals and adjacent channel interference signals. The filter bank is further adapted to provide estimated data signals and to calculate estimated interference signals. One or more interference generating processors are adapted to receive the calculated estimated interference signals to enable the interference generating processor to generate interference signals corresponding to the calculated estimated interference signals. The interference generating processor subtracts the interference signals from the estimated data signals in order to output relatively more accurate estimated data signals. A decision device is provided for use with the interference generating processors for estimating data signals in accordance with the relative ability of the interference processor to cancel interference with the estimated interference signals.

    • A receiver is provided that can receive a first signal transmitted on a first carrier and a second signal transmitted on a second carrier. The receiver includes a channel estimation portion, a multicarrier nonlinear equalizer, a first log likelihood computing portion and a second log likelihood computing portion. The channel estimation portion can output a first estimation. The multicarrier nonlinear equalizer can output a first equalized signal and a second equalized signal. The first log likelihood ratio computing portion can output a first log likelihood ratio signal based on the first equalized signal. The second log likelihood ratio computing portion can output a second log likelihood ratio signal based on the second equalized signal. The multicarrier nonlinear equalizer can further output a third equalized signal and a fourth equalized signal. The third equalized signal is based on the first signal, the second signal and the first estimation. The fourth equalized signal is based on the first signal, the second signal and the first estimation.

    • A burst analyzer is useful in a digital communication system in which a signal burst has a plurality of reference segments distributed within the signal burst for transmission of a plurality of reference signals. The burst analyzer includes a filter that compares the received signal, for each reference segment thereof, with each reference signal offset by one of a plurality of time offsets to generate correlation data. The burst analyzer then determines, for each reference segment of the signal burst, a maximum correlation value from the correlation data for each time offset. Then the burst analyzer determines the time offset at which a sum of the maximum correlation values, over the plurality of reference segments, is a maximum. The burst analyzer jointly generates a frequency domain representation of the correlation data associated with the time offset at which the maximum correlation sum is a maximum, and then determines a frequency at which the frequency domain representation is a maximum.
