    • An implantable atrial defibrillator applies cardioverting electrical energy to the atria of a human heart in response to detection of an atrial fibrillation episode and stores selected data associated with the detected atrial fibrillation episode. The atrial defibrillator includes a cardiovertor which provides successive applications of cardioverting electrical energy to the atria of the heart until one of the pulses successfully cardioverts the atria. A memory system stores selected heart activity data in connection with the detected episode including heart activity data related to initial detection of the atrial fibrillation episode and heart activity data occurring from before and until after the application of the cardioverting electrical energy which successfully cardioverts the atria of the heart.

    • There is disclosed an implantable atrial defibrillator for applying cardioverting electrical energy to the atria of a heart when the atria are in need of cardioversion. The atrial defibrillator includes a sense channel adapted to be associated with at least one atrium of the heart to provide a cardiac signal during a plurality of cardiac cycles of the heart and a timer which determines a cardiac interval duration for each of the cardiac cycles. The defibrillator further includes an atrial detector for analyzing the cardiac signal provided by the sense channel during selected ones of the cardiac cycles wherein each one of the selected ones of the cardiac cycles has a cardiac interval greater than a predetermined duration. A cardioverter applies cardioverting electrical energy to the atria responsive to the atrial detector detecting atrial fibrillation of the heart.

    • A system for use in implanting an implantable cardiac device includes an external device operable to emulate the operation of the implantable cardiac device in accordance with a set of modality and operating parameters. An external programmer includes a transmitter for transmitting the set of operating and modality parameters and the external device includes a receiver for receiving the set of operating parameters transmitted by the external programmer. A memory within the external programmer stores the transmitted set of operating parameters and retransmits the set of operating parameters to the implantable cardiac device after it is implanted. The external programmer and external device each include a telemetry antenna. The external programmer and external device are arranged for aligning the telemetry antennas when the external programmer and external device are being used together. The external programmer further includes a control panel arrangement which enables convenient control panel positioning by an implanting physician.

    • A method and system for transferring patient information from a source patient monitor having a source patient database to a destination patient monitor having a destination patient database. In a preferred embodiment, a transport module is connectable to a source patient monitor and a destination patient monitor. The transport module is also connectable to a patient for receiving patient information. The transport module contains a transport database for storing patient information. The transport module is connected to the patient. The transport module is then connected to the source patient monitor. Upon receiving a request to move the patient, patient information is uploaded from the source patient database to the transport database. The transport module is then disconnected from the source patient monitor. The patient is then moved. The transport module is then connected to the destination patient monitor and patient information is downloaded from the transport database to the destination patient database. In a preferred embodiment, the uploading and downloading of patient information occur concurrently with read/write access to the destination and source patient databases by a central monitor or data collection module.

    • A defibrillator, such as an atrial defibrillator, applies cardioverting electrical energy to the atria of a heart when the atria are in need of cardioversion. The atrial defibrillator includes an atrial sense channel for sensing atrial activity and ventricular sense channels for sensing ventricular activity to generate heart activity data, a memory for storing the heart activity data, and a cardiovertor which applies cardioverting electrical energy to the atria if the heart activity satisfies a predetermined criteria. A storage control causes at least a portion of the heart activity data to be retained in the memory if the heart activity data fails to satisfy the predetermined criteria.
