    • 708,821. Waterproofing fibrous materials. BRADFORD DYERS' ASSOCIATION, Ltd. April 8, 1952 [April 16, 1951], No. 8856/51. Class 140 Fibrous materials such as fabrics, furs, or paper are made water-repellent by treatment with an organo-silicon compound or a silicon halide in conjunction with a titanium compound capable of undergoing hydrolysis or decomposition to an oxide or hydrated oxide of titanium, or with a titanium oxide of hydrated oxide of titanium in colloidal or finely divided form. The silicon compound may be applied before simultaneously with, or after the titanium compound, and either or both may be applied as a liquid or vapour, a solution in an organic solvent, such as petroleum spirit or an aqueous solution or dispersion. The material may be heated or exposed to ultra violet light after treatment. The silicon compound may be a substituted silane, e.g. an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkyloxy aryloxy, aralkyloxy. halogeno, alkenyl, alkenyl-halogeno, alkenyl-alkoxy, alkenyl aryloxy, or amino silane, a silazane, silanol, siloxane, polysiloxane, or silicon ester. The hydrolysis products of the substituted silanes may be used as.solutions in strong, water-soluble bases. The compounds or mixtures specified include, (a) methylpolysiloxanes, methylhydrogen polysiloxanes, or their mixtures, e.g. as described in Specification 680,265, (b) a mixture of methyl-chloro-silanes. (c) vinyl-trichlorsilane, (d) dimethyl dischlorosilane, (e) silicon tetrachloride. The titanium compound may be a tetra-alkyl or tetra-aryl orthotitanate, e.g. ethyl, propyl, butyl, hexyl, heptyl, or cresyl titanate, titanium salts of fatty acids, e.g. the acetate, ethylhexoate, laurate, or stearate, titanium halides or sulphates, e.g. titanium tetrachloride and titanous sulphate. Examples describe the treatment of cotton and woollen gaberdine, nylon, acetate rayon, and polyester fabrics, paper, and asbestos filter cloth.
