    • Time-division multiplexing and demultiplexing of N optical, pulse code modulated signals is achieved by means of a cascaded array of N polarization rotators and associated polarization selective prisms. At the multiplexer, the N pulse-encoded signals, polarized along a first direction, are coupled bit-bybit into the respective rotators by means of their associated prisms. Simultaneously, pulses, having a repetition rate equal to the bit rate of the individual signals are applied to all of the rotators, including a 90* rotation in the direction of polarization of the signals. This permits the signals to pass through the rotator-prism pairs and to enter into a common transmission path as a time-division multiplexed signal. At the receiver, the multiplexed signal enters a demultiplexer comprising an identical array of polarization rotators and polarization prisms. Simultaneously, synchronized pulses, applied to the rotators, effect a 90* rotation in the direction of polarization of the signals, causing the prism to deflect each of the signals, bit-by-bit along W different wavepaths. In a second embodiment, traveling electrical pulses are employed to produce the 90* rotation of the signal polarization.

    • There is disclosed a compact, narrow-band single frequency laser employing a pair of internal grating reflectors photo-induced in a suitably sensitized transparent material doped with an active medium. Specifically, a laser is obtained in a photosensitized sample of dye-doped poly(methyl methacrylate). It includes an internal resonator formed by a pair of grating reflectors permanently induced in the sample, in which optical guides can also be induced upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The resonated laser frequency is selected from the usual broad dye emission spectrum by choice of the grating spacings. Tunability can be achieved by applying stress to the sample to change the grating spacings and the laser resonator length either simultaneously or independently.

    • Three parallel longitudinally extending spaced-apart electrodes are formed on an electro-optic waveguiding thin film. The outer two electrodes are connected to one output terminal of a modulating signal source and the center electrode is connected to the other terminal thereof. The resulting electric field configuration in the thin film under the center electrode includes a component that is perpendicular to the thin film. This component is effective to modify the nature of an optical beam propagated longitudinally in the film under the center electrode. A phase or amplitude modulator for optical signals is thereby realized.
