    • An electrostatic actuator and drive configuration device for use in a system requiring a long term ON state operation. The device includes a first electrostatic actuator positioned to operate in the system requiring the long term ON state upon activation of a power supply. The device also includes a second electrostatic actuator positioned to operate in the system requiring the long term ON state upon activation of the power supply. A timer is connected to the power supply to alternately select the first or the second actuator for activation to drive the selected actuator to the ON state. The timer is controlled to select the first or second electrostatic actuator on an alternating basis to prevent either electrostatic actuator from remaining in the ON state for more than a predetermined time without the other actuator being selected. The electrostatic actuators may be configured in parallel or in series, depending upon the demands of the system. When the electrostatic actuators are switches, linear actuators or relays, they are normally connected side by side mechanically parallel. When the actuators are shutters, mirrors or valves, normal connection is in sequence end to end. When devices are selected to be in the ON condition, the selection should be such that each device is closed before the other is opened.

    • A touch mode electrostatic actuator and method of making the same, having first and second electrode driven surfaces positioned to move between a spaced apart relationship and a contact relationship when dielectric layer on each of the first and second electrode surfaces is subjected to a source of electrical potential to selectively actuate and discharge the dielectric layers to cause the movement between the relationships. The electrostatic actuators of this invention includes a hydrophobic layer for preventing absorption of water thereon, the hydrophobic layers being adapted to cause condensed water to form drops and prevent formation of a continuous water layer. The hydrophobic layer may be a coating on a hydrophilic actuator or, alternatively, may be made entirely from a hydrophobic material. The preferred hydrophobic material is selected from a group consisting of organic materials such as octadecyltrichlorosilane, perfluoro-decyltrichlorosilane, tetrafluoroethylene, and inorganic materials such as a diamond type carbon layer. The hydrophobic layer is electrically isolating and chemically stable in its intended environment. In the preferred embodiments, the hydrophobic material is applied to the hydrophilic dielectric layer by a method selected from dipping, plasma deposition, Langmuir-Blodgett technique, sputtering and CVD deposition.

    • A circuit and method for controlling an array of n electrostatic actuators, where n is an integer, preferably of at least 32 and may be in excess of 10,000 or more. At least one high voltage generator is provided having a desired high voltage output. N switches are operably connected to the generator, each switch being directly connected to one of the n electrostatic actuators. N capacitors, one of which is connected in parallel to each of the n actuators receives voltage from the high voltage generator through its specific switch. A central processor controls the desired voltage in a particular wave form and the time each of the n switches is closed. The shape of the voltage and the time of the voltage rise is determined by the voltage leakage in the components of the array.

    • An electrostatic actuator device and method for actuating the device. The device includes a pair of actuator plates having electrodes for conducting a voltage potential thereto and at least one of the pair being movable with respect to the other. The plates are positioned to move upon application of a voltage potential through electrodes attached thereto. A driving means provides a voltage potential to the electrodes to cause the movement of the at least one plate. The driving means produces compound AC signal with rise/fall sections at least 10 to 100 times (preferably more than twenty times) the mechanical response time of the actuator. The preferred AC signals are selected from square-wave, sine wave, triangle wave and mixtures thereof. The preferred circuit produces rise/fall sections that are a quarter of a full period of the AC wave signal, and only the nominal section of the compound AC signal is used for driving the actuator. Preferred is an actuation cycle having a rise section with the signal amplitude increasing from zero to the desired final value through a plurality of individual periods of the a AC signal and a fall section with the signal amplitude decreasing from a nominal final value to zero through a similar plurality of individual periods of basic AC signal. The specific frequency of the square wave AC signal and the rise fall times of the amplitude modulation is adjusted to minimize stiction between said actuator plates.

    • A device for controlling the proportional pressure or flow of fluids over a range of source pressure. An addressable array is interposed between a source pressure and an exit pressure chamber. The array comprises a plurality of valves, the total open area of which define the opening between the source pressure and the exit pressure. Also provided is an actuator for separately actuating each valve of the array between an open and a closed condition, whereby the total number of open valves determines the flow between the source pressure and the exit pressure. The preferred valves are electrostatically actuated valves including upper and lower electrodes addressable by a conductor, and are fabricated monolithically on a single substrate. The array is formed so that actuation actuates a number of valves ranging from one valve to all the valves in the array. The device may be used to control flow between the source pressure and the exit pressure chamber. In another embodiment, the device further includes a proportional exit port in communication with the device for discharging a controlling pressure therefrom, the exit port being positioned to receive the proportion of fluid not discharged through the addressable array.

Force rebalancing voltages can be applied to some torquer electrodes to electrostatically null quadrature and/or Coriolis-related proof mass motion along a sense axis of the device. A pumping voltage at approximately twice the motor drive frequency of the proof masses can be used to pump the proof masses along the sense axis.
