    • A layer above the MAC and PHY layers of a wireless network employs a forward error correction (FEC) protocol extension with selective acknowledgement to reduce the likelihood of retries to enhance performance in, for example, home entertainment networking applications. In addition, certain system parameters of the wireless network are controlled so as to either i) align required bandwidth with particular sustainable channel parameters of the wireless network, or ii) modify the channel characteristics. One or more of three mitigation techniques might be employed with the FEC protocol extension to enhance maintenance of radio communication in the wireless network: Physical-layer Rate Adaptation, Dynamic Interference Avoidance, and Media-encoding Layer Adaptation.

    • In a preferred embodiment, a battery charging system in the form of an integrated circuit (IC), incorporated in a consumer electronic device, has a charging controller, a charging current generator, a junction temperature sensor, and a device current monitor. The junction temperature sensor provides to the charging controller a measured junction temperature of the IC. The charging current generator utilizes fractional synthesis, which involves regulating the duty cycles of multiple current sources, to achieve increased current resolution. The charging controller regulates the charging current provided by the charging current generator based on the relation of the measured junction temperature to three or more threshold temperatures. The device current monitor provides to the charging controller information about the current utilization of the consumer electronic device, thus allowing the charging controller to determine the device non-charging current and give priority for available current to user applications running on the consumer electronic device.

    • In described embodiments, closed-loop mapping employs terrain and topology information when generating a closed-loop route given input route characteristics. Terrain and topology information collectively identify, for example, whether the road is 1) flat or inclined; 2) paved, concrete, crushed stone, or dirt; 3) in open or shaded areas, and 4) within certain area types. The location of the start and end points (e.g., a geographic location or position), the length of the desired route, and route characteristics are received as input to generate the closed-loop route. Route characteristics might include, for example, i) particular inclines/declines to modify the cardiovascular exercise from traversing the output closed route, ii) preferred types of terrain the output closed route includes, such as pavement or dirt paths, and iii) particular zones or areas to be included or avoided in the desired route.

    • A remote control unit for use with an in-home audio player adapted to play pre-recorded music stored on a semiconductor music chip storage medium. In accordance with one preferred embodiment of the invention, the remote unit is a battery powered, hand held device which enables customized music selection to be made at the audio player from a distant position. The remote control unit includes an LCD display, a series of control buttons and an infrared communication interface for transmitting and receiving data from the audio player. A docking port is included in the audio player for mating with the remote control in order to download general information stored in memory of the audio player regarding each of the music chips which it has loaded. A processor within the remote control guides the user through a menu driven software routine for making music selection at the player. A user scrolls through the various menus by use of a navigation pointer. Soft keys on the remote take on different functions depending on the location within the menu driven software routine. For example, a user can choose to play individual music tracks according to a category of music, musical artist or specific song. Other functions of the remote include play, pause, scan (forward and reverse) and fast scan, as well as On/Off and volume control.
