    • A system and method for forming a beam and creating nulls. The inventive method combines frequency domain suppression technology for narrow-band jammer rejection with orthogonal weighting using Eigen analysis for jammer nulling and signal beam-forming for an array antenna system. The inventive system is adapted for use with an adaptive array antenna having a plurality of radiating elements. The system includes a frequency domain suppressor connected to the array antenna and an orthogonal weighting subsystem connected to the frequency domain suppressor. In the illustrative implementation, signals received by each radiating elements are processed by an analog front-end and digitized. The frequency domain suppressor includes a Fast Fourier transformer (FFT) and a frequency domain suppressor for each element in the array. The frequency domain suppressor further includes a threshold evaluator which reads the signals output by the FFT's and provides threshold controls to the spectral suppressors. The orthogonal subsystem includes an adaptive weighting unit connected to the output of each of the spectral suppressors. The orthogonal weighting subsystem further includes an orthogonal weighting estimator for determining and optimal orthogonal Eigen-weighting to be applied to each of the adaptive weighting units. The outputs of each of the adaptive weighting processors are combined and inverse Fast Fourier transformed to provide one or more output beams and or one or more nulls in an efficient manner designed to leave the system with at least one degree of freedom for other functions.

    • A buried double heterostructure laser device isdescribed. A wafer of double heterostructure material is formed into narrow mesa stripes. A native oxide coating is formed on the side walls of the mesa. Semiconductor material having an index of refraction which is closely matched to the index of the active region is deposited over the mesa structure. High resistivity polycrystalline material forms on the native oxide and monocrystalline material forms on the top of the mesa. Vertical carrier and optical confinement is achieved by the higher bandgap cladding layers of the double heterostructure configuration. The native oxide acts as an electrical insulator to confine pumping current to the mesa. The closely matched polycrystalline material confines light parallel to the junction plane and prevents excitation of higher order transverse modes. Devices have been fabricated which exhibit cw threshold currents at room temperature as low as 55 mA.

    • A process and apparatus for rapidly and accurately forming corrugated substructures of complex shapes utilizing composite material A plurality of movable elongated ribs are positioned on a base plate for lateral movement between an open position at which all of the ribs are physically separated and a closed position at which each of the ribs is engaged with its adjacent rib or ribs. The ribs are so formed that when they collectively assume the closed position, upper regions of the ribs remain spaced apart to define longitudinally extending channels. A pre-cut sheet of composite prepreg material is laid over the ribs so as to be coextensive with them. The ribs are then moved together mechanically or by means of vacuum drawing the sheet material into the channels or both. With the aid of elongated tooling bars placed on the outer surface of the sheet material and aligned with successive channel s, the sheet material is drawn into conforming relationship with the ribs. A frame fixture is then attached to encompass the outer periphery of the ribs to releasably hold the ribs in their collectively closed positions. So supported, the sheet material can be removed from the base plate, then cured so as to retain the corrugated shape imparted by the ribs acting collectively.

    • A pneumatic impact power tool has a tool body with a bit-receiving axial bore in its end surface. A cap is threaded on the end of the tool body and has an end wall spaced from the end surface to define a cavity and a lobed opening in the cavity matably receiving a like-lobed bit shank, the cavity being dimensioned to accommodate the lobes. Spring-biased balls project into the cavity from radial bores in the end cap to engage the shank lobes and bias them to a rotational position non-aligned with the opening lobes to inhibit removal. The cavity is dimensioned to afford a slight axial clearance to accommodate axial movement of the lobes. A cover on the end cap is recessed to receive the bias springs, retaining both the springs and the cover in place. The end cap has a annular channel communicating with an exhaust passage in the tool body and four exhaust ports in the end wall.
