摘要： A system and method for assisting an integrated GPS/wireless terminal unit in acquiring one or more GPS satellite signals from the GPS satellite constellation. The invention includes a method for narrowing the PN-code phase search. That is, by accounting for the variables in geographic location and time delay relative to GPS time, the systems and methods of the present invention generate a narrow code-phase search range that enables the terminal unit to more quickly acquire and track the necessary GPS satellites, and thereby more quickly provide accurate position information to a requesting entity.

摘要： To transmit notification indicators for broadcast and multicast services, a base station maps the services to random sequences based on their identifiers. The base station generates the random sequence for each service based on a hash function or a PN generator and the service identifier. Each random sequence is associated with a specific location for sending a notification indicator in each frame. The locations for the notification indicators for each random sequence are randomized with respect to the locations for the notification indicators for each remaining random sequence. This randomness characteristic reduces the likelihood of false alarm. For each service, the base station sets the notification indicators to the same notification value in each modification period. The base station transmits the notification indicators for each service at the random locations determined by the random sequence for the service.

In one method, the coarse position estimate for the device and revised (more accurate) position estimates for the transmitters are received. A revised position estimate for the device is initialized (e.g., to the coarse position estimate). An update vector is next computed based on the initial and revised position estimates for the device and the initial and revised position estimates for the transmitters. The revised position estimate for the device is then updated based on the update vector. The computation for the update vector and the updating of the revised position estimate for the device can be repeated a number of times to achieve a more and more accurate estimate.

摘要： A method and apparatus for generating and use of a position location reference signal that allows a receiver to receive position location signals from relatively weak signal generators when in the presence of a strong signal source. The position location reference signals from multiple sources can be synchronized to occur within a scheduled time slot of a time division multiplexed communication system. During the scheduled time slot, each signal source can configure a transmission that includes a media access control address that corresponds to a value reserved for position location signals. Each signal source also configures the transmission to include a position location reference signal that corresponds to the signal source. The position location signals from each of the signal sources is positioned to occur at a time within the data portion of the scheduled time slot that no neighboring signal source transmits its corresponding position location signal.

摘要： Base stations in a wireless telecommunications network are calibrated to GPS system time by using position measurement data obtained from one or more hybrid mobile stations during regular position location sessions. Therefore, the calibration data need not be obtained externally from a calibration instrument, and the calibration may occur on a continuous basis to compensate for any disturbances or drift in the base stations. Privacy concerns are alleviated by using regular position location sessions that occur only when the operator of the hybrid mobile station places or answers a wireless telephone call. In a preferred implementation, the network uses Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), and the hybrid mobile stations may provide Advanced Forward Link Trilateration (AFLT) or GPS position location data to the network.
