    • An electronic musical instrument comprises a keyboard, a tone signal forming circuit to produce musical tone signals corresponding to keys being depressed on the keyboard, a memory to store musical performance data, a keyboard display device to visually instruct a pupil or trainee as to which keys are to be depressed on the keyboard in accordance with the performance data read out of the memory so that the pupil or trainee may effect a musical performance on the keyboard while following key indications, and an automatic musical performance device to effect an automatic musical performance of different type from the musical performance effected on the keyboard. The pupil or trainee may selectively effect the musical performance on the keyboard with or as the accompaniment by or for the automatic musical performance. Preferably the pupil or trainee effects a melody or chord performance on the keyboard with the accompaniment of an automatic chord performance and/or an automatic rhythm performance, or an automatic melody performance and/or an automatic rhythm performance.

    • Automatic composition apparatus and method are provided which are capable of modifying a rhythm pattern to provide a wide variety of rhythm patterns only through simple setting, and a storage medium that accomplishes this function is provided. Characteristics of a rhythm pattern of a piece of music to be composed are established. Characteristic data that match the established characteristics are retrieved from a rhythm pattern database rhythm pattern database comprising a plurality of rhythm patterns and characteristic data indicating characteristics of each of the rhythm patterns. One of the rhythm patterns is selected, that corresponds to the retrieved characteristic data. Accordingly, different rhythm patterns having the same characteristics can be easily obtained. Further, composition conditions to be applied to a whole piece of music to be composed are established, and the established composition conditions are allocated to each of sectional elements that constitute the piece of music, for example, a passage, a phrase, or a measure, and the composition conditions for the whole piece of music, in other words, distributed among the respective passages, phrases or measures. Therefore, a rhythm pattern having different characteristics may be obtained by changing only the characteristics of the whole piece of music, thus assuring an improved efficiency with which the user operates the apparatus.

    • A sheet feeding device for feeding a sheet stacked on a sheet cassette to an image forming portion of an image recording apparatus. The sheet feeding device includes a sheet supplying roller unit and a sheet feed roller positioned downstream thereof. The sheet supplying roller unit includes an intermediate small diameter portion and integral large diameter portions positioned to interpose the small diameter portion therebetween. Each large diameter portion has a contacting area in contact with the sheet, whereas the intermediate small diameter portion is spaced away from the sheet. A sheet edge detection arm is swingably provided and contactable with the sheet fed by the contacting area. The sheet edge detection arm is movable into a space defined between the small diameter portion and a confronting separation pad. If sheet is fed by the sheet supplying roller unit, the sheet edge detection arm is urged by the sheet and a posture of the arm is changed. The arm is abuttable to a lever member which is pivotally movable in accordance with the movement of the sheet edge detection arm. A photosensor is provided at a moving locus of the lever member. When the lever member moves across the photosensor, sheet edge detection signal is generated.
