    • A pressure regulating valve has a bore in which in a spool and an accumulator piston are disposed. A spring is disposed between the two elements and arranged to bias the spool in a first axial direction which tends to maximize the amount of hydraulic fluid which is supplied to a friction element. As the accumulator chamber defined by the accumulator piston fills, the spring is compressed increasing the bias on the spool.The spool defines a feedback chamber, the pressure in which which tends to bias the spool in a second axial direction which minimizes the supply of hydraulic fluid, and which features a chamber which is supplied directly with a pressure indicative of transmission torque. This chamber is arranged so that the pressure therein produces a bias which also acts in the first axial direction and so that no resistance to the stroking of the accumulator piston is produced.

    • During D-RANGE operation under which a 4-2 downshift is required, a 4-2 downshift sequence valve is responsive to the pressure which is supplied to a friction element which is involved with the production of 3rd gear, and is maintained in a position wherein the 4th speed apply chamber of a band brake servo is maintained pressurized, until such time as the pressure in the 3rd speed friction element drops below a predetermined limit.When a manual valve is moved out of the D-RANGE position to one wherein engine braking is required, a control pressure is applied to the 4-2 sequence valve which immediately switches it to a position wherein it drains the 4th speed apply chamber irrespective of the 3rd speed pressure. At the same time an overrunning clutch control valve is supplied with the same control pressure and is moved to a position wherein an overrunning clutch is supplied with line pressure and engaged to enable engine braking.

    • An engine-transmission drivetrain includes a torque converter situated between the engine output shaft and the transmission. The torque converter includes a lock-up clutch. A speed sensor, which measures the rotational speed of an output shaft of the transmission, generates a pulse signal. A transmission controller includes a deceleration dependent lock-up release command generator and a torque converter speed dependent lock-up release command generator. The pulse signal from the speed sensor is used as inputs to both of the lock-up release generators. In the deceleration dependent lock-up release command generator, the pulse signal is processed to derive information as to the magnitude of deceleration which the transmission output shaft is subject to. In the torque converter speed dependent lock-up release generator, the pulse signal is processed to derive information as to rotational speed of an output element of the torque converter. At deceleration with the magnitude of deceleration greater than or equal to a predetermined reference, the deceleration dependent lock-up release generator gains authority over the lock-up release control. At deceleration with the magnitude of deceleration less than the predetermined reference, the torque converter speed dependent lock-up release generator gains authority over the lock-up release control.
