    • A method of printing an image on a print medium with ink using an ink jet printer. A printhead has a plurality of ink emitting orifices for jetting ink onto the print medium, with the ink emitting orifices being spaced apart in the advance direction a common distance. The printhead is movable in a direction transverse to the advance direction in incremental steps, with the incremental steps having a minimum step distance. An image area has a plurality of rows and columns of pixel locations. The columns of pixel locations have an advance pixel resolution which is dependent upon the common distance. The rows of pixel locations have a transverse pixel resolution which is dependent upon the minimum step distance. A threshold matrix is defined with a plurality of rows and columns of cells, with each cell corresponding to one of the pixel locations in the image area. A threshold value is assigned to each cell within the threshold matrix. A transition matrix is defined having a same number of rows as the threshold matrix and a greater number of columns than the threshold matrix. Each column of the transition matrix has cells with threshold values which correspond to one of the columns of the threshold matrix, and is disposed adjacent to at least one other column with cells of identically assigned threshold values. The ink is jetted onto the print medium, dependent upon the color value of the ink and the threshold values of the transition matrix.

    • A printer system and method with reduced memory. A first memory, a second memory, a third memory, and a device which converts image description data to bitmap data, compresses the bitmap data, prints the compressed bitmap data and controls the printing system. The system and method senses when the end of a swath of image description data is stored in the first memory or when the first memory is full, causing a conversion of the image description data to bitmap data. The bitmap data is stored in the second memory. The bitmap data in the second memory is compressed, and the compressed bitmap data is stored in the third memory. When the third memory means is full, the compressed bitmap data is printed. The memory capacity of each of the first, second, and third memories is variable, while the overall cumulative capacity of the first, second and third memories is held constant.

    • The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for firing the nozzles on an ink jet print head cartridge that requires a reduced number of data lines between the ink jet print head cartridge and the printer electronics. A group data line provides serial group select data that is stored in a set of group select latches on the ink jet print head cartridge and identifies a particular group of nozzles on the ink jet print head. A primitive data line provides primitive select data that is stored in a set of primitive select latches on the ink jet print head cartridge and identifies a particular nozzle in the selected set of nozzles. A first clock line provides a first clock signal that is used to advance the group select data and the primitive select data into the group select latches and primitive select latches respectively. The group select data and the primitive select data is decoded to produce firing data which is advanced to a set of firing latches in accordance with a second clock signal that is provided on a second clock line. The data in the firing latches is logically ANDed or NANDed with a firing pulse provided on a firing line in order to expel a drop of ink from the selected nozzle or nozzles on the ink jet print head cartridge.

    • A host computer transmits raster information to a multi-color ink jet printer. The printer includes a printhead connected with an electrical processor. The printhead includes a plurality of arrays of ink jetting heaters. Each array of ink jetting heaters corresponds to a different color ink to be jetted onto the print medium, and is offset relative to an adjacent array of ink jetting heaters in an advance direction of the print medium. First raster information for a first raster is transmitted from the host computer to the electrical processor of the printer. The first raster information is associated with a first array of ink jetting heaters. The print medium is printed on by selectively actuating the ink jetting heaters of the first array of ink jetting heaters, using the first raster information. After the first printing step, second raster information for a second raster is transmitted to the electrical processor. The second raster information is associated with the first array of ink jetting heaters. After the first printing step, third raster information for the first raster is transmitted to the electrical processor. The third raster information is associated with a second array of ink jetting heaters. After the second and third transmitting steps, the print medium is printed on by selectively actuating the ink jetting heaters of the first and second arrays of ink jetting heaters, respectively using the second and third raster information.
