    • The vaned flow reactor elements of an energy absorber for an aircraft arresting system are rotatably mounted coaxially on both sides of the vaned rotor to allow relative slippage in response to the flow reaction between them as the rotor is rotated by the input drive. The input drive is applied through a nylon tape or any other suitable payout element. Brakes within the casing retard the flow reactors and control their slippage to vary the force of the flow reaction between the flow reactors and rotor and thus vary the energy absorbed from the input drive. The more the reactor is retarded, the greater is the reaction force on the rotor and energy absorbed thereby. The brakes within the casing are disposed in heat exchange relation with the fluid to cool them and also to simplify the structure of the device.

    • A row of covered channels are installed within an airport runway under a cross runway pendant and between a series of pitted pendant supporting and retaining devices. The lids of the channels are aligned with the surface of the runway and have depressed grooves for receiving the pendant when it is pushed down under the wheels of an overrunning aircraft. The connected channels conduct water through them and from interposed pit boxes off the runway into drains. Flanges at the ends of the channels connect them to apertured walls of the pit boxes. Heaters in the channels adjacent the grooves maintain them free of ice. Elastomeric slabs of a material, such as polyurethane, having a low coefficient of restitution may cover the lids to help damp wave motion and vibration of the pendant. The lids also absorb and resist the damaging impact. A V-shaped groove facilitates fabrication and operation, and the elastomeric slab as well as the lid under it are removable to facilitate replacement and access to the interior of the channels for maintenance.

    • The cross runway pendant of an aircraft arresting system is supported and retained above the runway at a height suitable for aircraft hook engagement on spaced disengageable, elevating, gripping tong assemblies by the upward reaction of a resilient support accommodated within slots in the runway. The pendant is disengageably retained between flexible jaws on each assembly from which it is snatched upon engagement by a landing aircraft. The upward bias of the resilient support is overridden by actuating a compressed air cylinder to depress the assembly and cause it to release the pendant. A groove is installed across the runway under the pendant to permit full retraction of the pendant below the surface, and the part of the runway under the pendant may be made of a wear-resistant material such as polyurethane, having a low coefficient of restitution for helping to damp waves set up in the pendant when it is run over by unarrested aircraft wheels and for protecting the surface of the runway against resultant chipping and spalling.
