    • Machine learning for learning a characteristic amount of each pixel in a plurality of sample images, each including a particular region with a known contour, is performed in advance to obtain an evaluation function capable of evaluating whether or not each pixel is a pixel representing the contour based on the characteristic amount thereof. An arbitrary point is set within a particular region in an input image, and a discrimination region including the particular region is set in the input image with reference to the arbitrary point.     • A three-dimensional moving image and an ultrasonic moving image showing a body part making periodic motion are obtained, and, from the moving images, a characteristic part having a shape that changes with the periodic motion is extracted. Phases of the periodic motion captured in the moving images are obtained. For at least one of the moving images, the phases are obtained based on the shape of the extracted characteristic part. For each phase, the positions of the characteristic part shown in the three-dimensional moving image and the ultrasonic moving image are associated with each other based on the extracted characteristic part and the obtained phases. A superimposed image is generated by aligning, for each phase, the positions of the characteristic part shown in the three-dimensional moving image and the ultrasonic moving image with each other based on the associated positions of the characteristic part and the phases, and displayed.

    • Sharpness is adjusted for more appropriately representing a predetermined structure in an image. A parameter acquisition unit obtains a weighting parameter for a principal component representing a degree of sharpness in a face region detected by a face detection unit as an example of the predetermined structure in the image, by fitting to the face region a mathematical model generated by a statistical method such as AAM based on a plurality of sample images representing human faces in different degrees of sharpness. Based on a value of the parameter, sharpness is adjusted in at least a part of the image. For example, a parameter changing unit changes the value of the parameter to a preset optimal face sharpness value, and an image reconstruction unit reconstructs the image based on the parameter having been changed and outputs the image having been subjected to the sharpness adjustment processing.
