    • In a picture image reading system having a scanning system for scanning the surface of a picture image medium with light beams, an optical system for condensing the light beams transmitted through or reflected from the picture image medium and dividing the light beam into a plurality of light beams, and a plurality of density readers respectively responsive to the plurality of light beam where each density reader reads a predetermined ranges of density signals different from the ranges read by the remaining density readers, the improvement comprising a device for so establishing the density signal ranges read by the readers that adjacent density signal ranges partially overlap one another; a detecting device responsive to the density signals from the plurality of readers for detecting density signals occurring in overlapping portions where the density signal ranges of adjacent readers overlap and providing an overlap signal indicative of the occurrence; and a synthesizing device responsive to the density signals read from the plurality of readers and the overlap signal for connecting the density signals from the plurality of readers to synthesize a composite density signal corresponding to the entire density range of the picture.

    • A heated fuel intake system for an internal combustion engine for introducing warmed air to the engine and air to a fuel supply circuit in a carburetor comprises a heat stove from which the warmed air is introduced into an air cleaner to heat the air to a temperature equal to or higher than a first predetermined temperature. The introduction of the warmed air from the heat stove is interrupted by a first valve unit when the temperature of the air to be fed to the engine has exceeded the temperature equal to or higher than the first predetermined temperature. The introduction of the warmed air into the air cleaner is again initiated when the temperature of the air inside the air cleaner becomes a value equal to a second predetermined temperature higher than the first predetermined temperature and, simultaneously therewith, an air-fuel ratio leaner is operated to introduce an additional air to compensate for the increased richness of the combustible mixture.

    • A method of and apparatus for continuously hot rolling steel slabs. Separate pieces of steel slabs are continuously fed from a slab yard and delivered to a carriage which is adapted to move reciprocatingly along the line of path of the steel slab pieces. The carriage carries a welder which can move transversely of the path of the slab pieces, and also clamp devices for clamping preceding and succeeding slabs to fix them to the carriage, as means for keeping the preceding and succeeding slab pieces in abutting condition. As a steel strip including a plurality of slab pieces welded together is moved at a predetermined rolling speed into a rolling mill, the carriage moves substantially at the same speed to keep the succeeding slab in abutment with the trailing end of the last slab piece of the steel strip, to permit the welder to weld these slab pieces at their abutting end. This welding is performed only over a part of the cross-sectional area of these slab pieces. The steel slabs are thus welded together into continuous form, delivered to the rolling mill and rolled by the latter. This system ensures a higher yield of products and permits a full continuous hot rolling of the steel slabs.
