    • A light source comprises a blue emitting LED operable to generate blue excitation light and a light emitting surface comprising a light transmissive substrate and a phosphor. The LED is configured to irradiate the light emitting surface with excitation light such that the phosphor emits light of a second wavelength and wherein light emitted by the source comprises a combination of blue light from the LED and the second wavelength light from the phosphor. The light emitting surface is interchangeable thereby enabling the source to generate different selected colors of light using the same LED. The phosphor can be provided as a layer on the substrate or incorporated within the light transmissive substrate. The light emitting surface can be configured as a waveguide or as a light transmissive window.

    • A light emitting sign comprising a light emitting display surface including at least one phosphor, and at least one radiation source configured to irradiate the display surface with excitation energy such that the phosphor emits light of a selected color. The sign further comprises a filter which is substantially transparent to light emitted by the display surface, filtering other colors of light. The display surface may be configured into a shape of a character, a symbol, or a device. Alternatively, a mask having at least one window substantially transparent to the emitted light and/or at least one light blocking region may be provided in which the window and/or light blocking region define a character, a symbol, or a device.

    • Novel green phosphors are disclosed having the comprise silicate-based compounds having the formula (Sr,A1)x(Si,A2)(O,A3)2+x:Eu2+, where A1 is at least one divalent cation (a 2+ ion) including Mg, Ca, Ba, or Zn, or a combination of 1+ and 3+ cations; A2 is a 3+, 4+, or 5+ cation, including at least one of B, Al, Ga, C, Ge, N, and P; A3 is a 1−, 2−, or 3− anion, including F, Cl, Br, and S; and x is any value between 1.5 and 2.5, both inclusive. The formula is written to indicate that the A1 cation replaces Sr; the A2 cation replaces Si, and the A3 anion replaces O. These green phosphors are configured to emit visible light having a peak emission wavelength greater than about 480 nm. They have applications in green illumination systems, red-green-blue backlighting systems, white LEDs, and plasma display panels (PDPs).

    • A lighting apparatus includes a combination of LED dice that emit light of a first color and a wavelength-shifting material (e.g., phosphor) that converts light of the first color to light of a second color. An appropriate combination of light of the first color and light of the second color can be used to produce light of a target color. In an embodiment, LED dice in the lighting apparatus are divided into two groups. Each LED die in the first group is combined with less wavelength-shifting material than needed to produce light of the target color, while each LED die in the second group is combined with more wavelength-shifting material than needed to produce light of the target color. As a result, the two groups produce light having colors on opposite sides of the target color in the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) chromaticity diagram. In some embodiments, the target color and color variations of both groups are on one straight line in the CIE chromaticity diagram, although it is to be understood that there might be small scattering within the groups. By adjusting the relative brightness of the two groups, the target color can be obtained.

    • A touch screen device includes a touch screen panel having a key input area and defining a plurality of touch-sensitive keys at the key input area, a control module operatively linking with the touch screen panel, and a security key inputting system operatively linked to the control module. The control module displays a plurality of input characters at the touch-sensitive keys respectively in such a manner that when one of the touch-sensitive keys is contacted, the control module identifies the corresponding input character being selected as an input data. The security key inputting system is arranged for randomly re-arranging the input characters at different touch-sensitive keys respectively, wherein the input characters are alternately displayed at the touch-sensitive keys for preventing the input characters from being read by memorization of fixed location.
