    • A method for requesting and processing a plurality of objects includes requesting a plurality of objects from a server, receiving a response message from the server, the response message containing the plurality of objects packed into the response message, and automatically unpacking the plurality of objects contained in the response message. The server includes an object packing module for packing requested objects into the response message. The client includes a plugin program that interacts with a network browser, in which the plugin program includes an unpacking module for unpacking the packed response message from the server. By delivering the plurality of requested objects in a single response message the objects are delivered over a single communication session thereby avoiding setting up and tearing down a plurality of communication sessions and reducing overhead processing. The objects can be thumbnail images forming the results of a search query.

    • A process is provided for managing operations including encoding operations in a network system including an administrator terminal, at least one server communicatively coupled to the administrator terminal via a computer network, and at least one multimedia device operative to generate media data and being communicatively coupled with a corresponding one of the servers. Each of the servers is operative to selectively activate the corresponding multimedia device, and is also operative to encode media data received from the corresponding multimedia device, and is further operative to access a corresponding memory device for storing media data. The process includes the steps of: displaying a graphical user interface including a server select interface component enabling a user of the administrator terminal to select one of the servers, and a mode select interface component enabling the user to select between a manual encoding mode of operation enabling the user to manually start and stop a manual encoding process performed by a selected server, and a scheduled encoding mode of operation enabling the user to define a schedule for automatically starting and stopping a scheduled encoding process to be performed by a selected server. User input is received, the input including server identification information indicative of a selected server, mode information indicative of a selected mode of operation, and encoding operation information defined based on the selected mode of operation. Commands and associated parameters, generated based on the encoding operation information, are transmitted to the selected server via the network.

    • A process of managing media data in a network is provided, the system including an administrator terminal, at least one media server communicatively coupled to the administrator terminal via a network, and a plurality of end user terminals, each of the media servers being operative to store media data, and to transfer portions of media data to selected locations via the network, at least one of the media servers also being operative to stream media data to selected ones of the end user terminals. The process provides a centralized user interface for scheduling and coordinating the execution of operations performed by the media servers. The process begins with a step of displaying a graphical user interface including a plurality of interface components on a display unit of the administrator terminal, the components enabling a user of the administrator terminal to define and schedule operations to be performed by selected ones of the media servers on corresponding portions of media data. User input includes: server identification information indicative of a selected media server; operation information specifying an operation to be performed by the selected media server on a selected portion of media data, and schedule information specifying a schedule for performing the specified operation. Commands and associated parameters are generated based on the operation information and schedule information, the commands and associated parameters for instructing the selected media server to execute the specified operation in accordance with the specified schedule.

    • According to the present invention, a media manager is provided which incorporates an application program interface (API) for converting high-level generic commands into device-level commands for output to a media device. The inventive media manager includes a high-level command processor which decodes the high-level generic commands and device-specific code mapping modules which convert the high-level generic commands decoded by the high-level command processor into device-level commands. Each of the device-level commands is output from one of the device-specific code-mapping modules to a corresponding one of the media devices. The present invention also encompasses a method of implementing an application program interface (API) for media devices. The method includes receiving high-level generic commands from a computer application, converting the high-level generic commands into device-level commands, and outputting each of the device-level commands to one of the media devices. The present invention also encompasses a computer program product including a computer-readable medium. The computer program product includes means for decoding high-level generic commands, means for converting the high-level generic commands into device-level commands, and means for outputting each of the device-level commands to a corresponding one of the media devices. The present invention further encompasses a common application program interface (API) which converts high-level generic commands received from a computer application into device-level commands which are output to a plurality of media devices including media servers which stores media objects. The common API includes a plurality of individual APIs which each perform a specific function.

    • The present invention is directed to a multimedia data storage system for storing multimedia data including a media server which stores media data on a short-term basis, and a media archive which stores media data on a long-term basis relative to the media server. The media archive is connected to the media server, which operates as a cache device for the media archive, for transmission of media data between the media archive and the media server. According to the present invention, a volume of the media data stored in the media server is controlled based on user-defined parameters. The present invention is also directed to a method of managing a media server as a cache device for a media archive within a multimedia data storage system. The media server stores media data on a short-term basis, whereas the media archive stores media data on a long-term basis relative to the media server. The media archive is connected to the media server for transmission of media data therebetween. According to the present invention, the method of managing includes determining a volume of the media data stored in the media server and controlling the volume of the media data stored in the media server based on user-defined parameters. The present invention is also directed to a computer-readable medium of instructions to be implemented in a multimedia data storage system including a media server and a media archive. The media server stores media data on a short-term basis and the media archive stores media data on a long-term basis relative to the media server.     • A non-computer interface to a storage system includes a set top box (STB) or interface unit connected to a storage system for storing information to be accessed by a user. The storage system can be a database, such as a relational database having a plurality of tables, or a digital library system, for storing information to be accessed by the user. Also stored in the storage system are navigation information or rules for controlling a user's navigation of the database. A user interacts with the storage system through the STB, sending navigation commands to the storage system via the STB. The navigation commands available to a user are generated by combining the navigation rules with the user's access privileges. The user can send navigation commands via a remote controller which sends cursor control commands to the STB. Alternatively, the user can send navigation commands via a virtual reality interface.
