    • Aqueous disperse compositions capable of irreversibly forming films, comprising an internal phase of at least one film-forming, non-asphaltic, oleaginous material and an external phase comprising a clay-thickened water slurry, containing, in addition to clay, a flocculating agent are disclosed. Typical film-forming materials are made by reacting a carboxylic acid with an overbased salt of an organic acid, particularly those that have been converted into non-Newtonian colloidal disperse systems such as an alkaline earth metal sulfonate gel. Typical clays are montmorillonite-type clays and usually the composition as a whole is thixotropic. These compositions are useful, for example, as coatings for preventing corrosion of metallic surfaces.

    • The present invention relates to modified non-Newtonian colloidal disperse systems exhibiting improved thickening power, particularly when diluted. These compositions are useful as high-solids, thermosetting caulks, molding compositions, extruding compositions and the like, but are particularly suitable for use as high solids thermosetting coating compositions. These coating compositions are heat-stable and sag-resistant.The compositions of this invention comprise a mixture of(B) at least one non-Newtonian colloidal disperse system comprising(B-1) solid metal-containing colloidal particles,(B-2) a liquid dispersing medium, and(B-3) at least one organic compound which is soluble in said dispersing medium, the molecules of said organic compound being characterized by a hydrophobic portion and at least one polar substituent; and(C) at least one hydrogenated block copolymer of a vinyl aromatic monomer and an aliphatic conjugated diene.Optionally, the compositions also contain (D) a substantially inert, normally liquid diluent.The invention also relates to methods of coating metal surfaces with the compositions of the invention described above as well as compositions comprising mixtures of neutral and/or basic metal salts of organic acidic materials and the copolymers (C) described above.

    • Polyolefin compositions are described which can be dyed by conventional dyeing techniques. Such polyolefins comprise a blend of (A) a polyolefin and (B) a dye-receptive amount of at least one metal sulfonate which is soluble in the polyolefin when melted, and which sulfonates are characterized by the formulae ##STR1## wherein R is an aliphatic group,R' is an aliphatic group containing at least about 8 carbon atoms,Ar is an aromatic group,M is an alkali or alkaline earth metal,n is at least 1,y is equal to 1 when M is an alkali metal and 1/2 when M is an alkaline earth metal, andx is equal to the valence of M.The preferred sulfonates are those represented by Formula (I) and especially wherein M is sodium. In particular, it has been found that films and fibers prepared from such polyolefin composition, and more particularly polypropylene compositions, are readily dyed with common dyes to provide deep shades and fastness.

    • The present invention contemplates the provision of two-component urethane coating compositions comprising a first component comprising an organic polyfunctional isocyanate, and a second component comprising an acidic ester of a phosphoric acid, the alcohol portions of said acidic acid being selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbyloxy and hydroxy-substituted hydrocarbyloxy compounds, such compositions providing enhanced corrosion resistance properties as well as improved flame retardency and metal adhesion characteristics over the two-component urethane systems of the prior art. An essential ingredient in the compositions of the invention is a non-Newtonian colloidal disperse system which can be provided with either the first component and/or the second component parts of the compositions of the invention. The non-Newtonian colloidal disperse systems provided in accordance with the present invention comprise (1) solid metal-containing colloidal particles predispersed in (2) a disperse medium of at least one inert organic liquid and (3) as an essential third component at least one member selected from the class consisting of organic compounds which are substantially soluble in said disperse medium, the molecules of said organic compound being characterized by polar substituents and hydrophobic portions. The invention also relates to a method of coating a substrate comprising mixing the foregoing components and depositing the resulting composition on said substrate.
