    • The beam of a cathode-ray tube, normally suppressed, is electromagnetically deflected by a triangular current in the x direction and by a sinusoidal current of substantially higher frequency in the y direction, thereby producing an invisible grid on the oscilloscope screen. Whenever the y-deflection signal matches an input signal to be visualized, the beam is turned on for a small fraction of a y-sweep cycle during which the y sweep is interrupted whereby a short horizontal trace is produced on the screen. For tracing a horizontal base line in response to a given reference signal, the x sweep may be momentarily accelerated to the frequency of the y sweep which in this case is interrupted for a full cycle; this acceleration takes place on every nth intersection of the y sweep with the imaginary base line.

    • The output of a random-noise generator is modulated with the aid of two fixed reference frequencies G1, G2 (one of which may be zero) to yield two mutually transposed but correlated noise bands overlapping in a frequency range which substantially coincides with a band of signal frequencies to be transmitted through a test circuit to be examined for second-order and third-order nonlinearities. With the sum or difference of any two correlated signal frequencies fi'', fi'''' in the two noise bands equal to a primary beat frequency F1 G2 + OR - G1, the amplitude of a signal of this beat frequency in the output of the test circuit receiving the two wholly or partly coincident noise bands is a measure of second-order nonlinearity of that test circuit throughout the signal band. The superposition of a pilot oscillation of frequency G3 (lying within the pass band of the test circuit) upon the primary beat frequency F1 gives rise to a secondary beat frequency F2 F1 + OR - G3 whereby the amplitude of another output signal, having this frequency F2, is a measure of third-order nonlinearity of the test circuit.

    • A system with a test position for measuring the amplitude (or phase) of an incoming signal wave of predetermined frequency is repetitively switched over to a calibrating position in which the system receives a reference oscillation of constant frequency and phase for automatically readjusting its circuits, if necessary. If the input signal disappears or drops below a certain minimum level, a sensing circuit reduces the rate of switchover or arrests the system in test position to reduce wear of the relay contacts employed therefor. A random or quasi-random change in that rate may be utilized to prevent false indications due to the stroboscopic effect of periodic switchover in the presence of a modulating frequency close to the switching rate.
