    • Transferring user state data for an application program from a first execution environment to a second execution environment. An interceptor component records interactions between the application program and a data repository when the application program is executed in the first execution environment. The locations of the recorded interactions in the data repository correspond to the user state data associated with the application program. A script component generates computer-executable scripts based on the identified locations and a migration component transfers the user state data associated with the application program from any first execution environment in which the application is installed to the second execution environment by executing the scripts in the second execution environment.

    • Application setting virtualization for a user. Application settings from a source computer are copied to a user-specific location on a destination computer and layered under corresponding application settings associated with one or more applications installed on the destination computer. In response to receiving a request from an application for an application setting, the requested application setting is retrieved from the layered application settings such that the layers are searched in order for the requested application setting and the first application setting found is retrieved and returned to the requesting application.

    • User state migration using file system hard links system and method. A file system hard link refers to a directory entry for a file that allow a file to be referenced by two or more separate filenames, without data of the file being stored in two or more places.A user state gather component receives information associated with user state (e.g., file and, optionally, setting(s)). The user state gather component stores a hard link to the file in a user state store. A user state apply component restores user state based on the hard link to the file stored in the user state store. For example, the user state apply component can restore user state once an operating system has been installed. Optionally, the system includes a plurality of user state stores that are linked together.
