    • A multiple selection vending machine for canned beverages and the like has individually operable can dispensers for each selection which load the selected, gravitationally fed can at one point and carry the can by gravity to a delivery point for release to the customer, all the while blocking other cans of the selection against release. Selector keys for manually operating the dispensers are controlled by a coin-actuated, mechanical latching mechanism which locks all keys until proper coinage has been deposited, whereupon the main latch of the mechanism is maintained released until a single product vend has been completed.

    • A locking system for a vending machine cabinet having an inner product area door and an outer security door for closing the cabinet as a whole utilizes the latch operating handle associated with the primary lock on the outer door, which latches the outer door to the cabinet, to conceal and prevent access to the secondary lock, which latches the two doors together with a space for housing control elements confined therebetween. Partial rotation of the handle when the primary lock is unlocked, exposes the secondary lock to permit unlocking of the latter without causing unlatching of the outer door from the cabinet, thus permitting the doors to be unlocked from one another as a prelude to opening of the outer door only for access to said housing space without exposing the storage area of the cabinet to ambient temperature air as would occur upon opening of the inner door also. Release of the primary lock alone permits access to the product area but not to the housing space to prevent unauthorized access to stored coins and tampering with control elements therewithin; while release of both locks permits access to either or both said area and said space, if desired.

    • In a currency acceptor, a transport having a reversible drive conveys a bill to be tested along a path of travel past a first photoelectric detector, a transducer head at a test station for sensing the physical properties of the bill, and then a second photoelectric detector. If the grid areas on opposite sides of the portrait on the bill have physical properties indicative of validity, testing circuitry responsive to the head produces an accept signal as each grid area passes the head. To be deemed valid, the first grid area must cause the production of an accept signal, the leading and trailing edges of the bill must be concurrently detected by the two photoelectric detectors as the portrait passes the head (determines that the bill is not too short), the second grid area must cause the production of a second accept signal by the time the bill reaches a predetermined position along the path, and thereafter the first photoelectric detector must not detect the bill or another, following bill until such time that the bill completely passes the second photoelectric detector and is accepted. If an invalid condition is encountered, the transport drive is reversed and the bill or counterfeit material is returned to the depositor and thereby rejected.

    • In an electromechanical coin totalizer, an escapement mechanism controls the movement of a totalizer arm in response to the deposit of coins of different denominations. The mechanism includes a first, fixed row of teeth on the arm and a second row of teeth shiftably carried by the arm for limited movement of the two rows of teeth relative to each other. The deposit of a coin of the largest denomination accommodated by the totalizer releases the totalizer arm and causes a retainer to engage and hold the second row of teeth to limit the movement of the totalizer arm, whereupon the second row is then released for return movement to its normal disposition in relation to the first row and the totalizer arm is relocked after having shifted through a displacement representing the value of such coin. When coins of lesser denomination are deposited, the first row is employed to control incremental movement of the arm.

    • A coin acceptor is capable of accepting either magnetic or nonmagnetic, legitimate coins of a single denomination. Separate coin paths are provided for testing magnetic and nonmagnetic coins for validity utilizing magnetic graduation and eddy-current separation principles. A coin rail defining the path for nonmagnetic coins is below a coin rail that defines the path for the magnetic coins, and a deposited coin is permitted to gravitate to the lower rail if it is of nonmagnetic composition. However, a guide ramp is provided that shifts into alignment with the upper rail when a magnetic coin is deposited to thereby divert the magnetic coin along the upper path. The guide ramp is shiftable between a normal position clearing the deposited coin and an operative position in alignment with the upper rail, response to the presence of a magnetic material in the deposited coin being provided through the use of a permanent magnet attached to the shiftable guide ramp which senses the deposited coin and shifts the ramp as it is attracted toward the approaching coin.
