    • An ignition apparatus includes: sparking coil supplying a sparking plug with a high voltage; an energy supply device supplying the sparking coil with energy; a first switch disposed therebetween; and a control device controlling the first switch's conduction. The energy supply device has a DC power supply, a resonance coil connected to the DC power supply, a sparking capacitor connected to the resonance coil, and a second switch disposed between the sparking capacitor and an earth, and charges the sparking capacitor to have a voltage value larger than that of the DC power supply in absolute value by making the resonance coil and the sparking capacitor generate an LC resonance when the second and first switches are turned ON and OFF, respectively, according to an instruction from the control device whereas supplying the sparking coil with energy when the second and first switches are operated inversely according to another instruction.

    • A switching element operates to be turned on or off at a frequency in the order of megahertz. A reactor supplies a resonance current generated by resonance of the reactor with a floating capacitance between electrodes to between the electrodes. The resonance current does not flow in a direct-current power supply. By turning a capacitor and a floating inductance into a serial resonant state, the reactor ideally supplies the resonance current to between the electrodes without influence of the floating inductance. A high-frequency voltage asymmetric in positive and negative polarities is applied to between the electrodes and a current pulse can be made into a short pulse. Therefore, finish machining with high surface roughness can be performed.

    • In a reset period, through applying a rectangular pulse (Pya) of positive polarity to an electrode (Y) and applying a CR pulse (Pxa) of negative polarity to an electrode X, a full lighting pulse is applied between the electrodes (X and Y). The application of the voltage is stopped before a CR pulse (Pxc) reaches a final potential, to generate the pulse (Pxa). A full erase pulse (Pxb) made of a CR pulse having a polarity reverse to that of the pulse (Pxa) is applied to the electrode (X). An erase operation reverses the polarity of wall charges accumulated by a full lighting to effectively perform a potential control operation. The potential control pulse (Pxc) is applied to the electrode (X) to generate a discharge, and the state of the wall charges in a discharge cell is controlled by the discharge to generate an optimal amount of wall charges for a subsequent addressing discharge. The final voltage of the pulse (Pxc) is set equal to a voltage (−Vxg) of an address pulse (Pa). Thus, it is possible to generate a plurality of pulses and stabilize an operation of a PDP with a simple constitution.
