    • A system and method are described for identifying an appropriate demand distribution to use for safety stock planning within a supply chain management (“SCM”) system. For example, one embodiment of the invention comprises a computer-implemented method comprising: extracting historical demand characteristics for a product from a specified data source, the demand characteristics including the mean value of the demand for specified periods of time and/or the fraction of periods without any demand; evaluating the historical demand characteristics including the mean value of the demand for the specified periods and/or the fraction of periods without any demand; based on the evaluation, categorizing the demand characteristics into one of two or more different predefined categories; and using the classification to perform safety stock calculations for the product over the specified periods of time.

    • Methods and apparatuses enable creating a stateful simulation process with stateless messages. A stateless message instantiates a simulation object for a system to be simulated. The simulation object is identified by an identifier. Activity request messages, which are stateless, identify the simulation object identifier and can thus be associated with the simulation object. Results of execution of requested activities are stored in the simulation object, and thus persisted in the simulation object. In one embodiment, the persisting of simulation results in the simulation object allows the simulation data to be isolated from the active system data. In one embodiment, results of the execution of the simulation are merged in whole or in part with the active backend data.

    • A method and system for interactively exploring data objects is provided. A user action selecting a portion of a first one of the data objects. The selected portion of the first one of the data objects comprising at least one attribute correspondingly mapped to a meaning. At least one query is retrieved, the at least one query comprising at least one input parameter correspondingly mapped to the meaning associated with the at least one attribute of the selected portion. In response to a user selection of the retrieved query, a value of the at least one attribute of the selected portion is passed as input to the retrieved query. A search request is generated based on the retrieved query with the passed value as the input parameter to obtain at least a second data object representing supplementary data related to the first one of the data objects.
