    • A mold opening and closing mechanism for an I.S. machine which has a pair of mold support mechanisms supported for horizontal displacement between a retracted position and an advanced position. These support mechanisms are linearly displaced by a drive assembly which includes a lead screw, a housing secured to the section frame for supporting the lead screw, a motor coupled to the lead screw, nuts operatively associated with the lead screw, and links interconnecting the nuts with their associated mold support mechanism. The housing has a rear wall defining a flat surface, and the nuts have flat rear bearing surfaces with a selected spacing therebetween when the mold support mechanism is fully retracted. The lead screw has a rigidity selectively chosen so that when the mold mechanism is displaced to the advanced position into engagement with the other mold support mechanism, with a predetermined force, the lead screw will deflect to establish engagement between the flat bearing surfaces and the rear flat wall surface of the housing which is secured to the frame, whereby the mold support mechanism will be part of a continuous solid structure extending from the section frame, up the housing of each of the drive assemblies, across the nuts and the links of each drive assemblies, and across mold support mechanisms thereby positively preventing the vertical or horizontal displacement of the engaged mold support mechanisms from forces applied thereto.

    • An invert and neck ring holder mechanism having an opposed pair of neck ring holders displaceable from a blow station to a blank station of a section of an I.S. machine. The invert and neck ring holder mechanism has a pair of an opposed pair of pneumatically operated cylinder assemblies extending between a gear housing a gear and side brackets including a cylinder housing supporting a neck ring holder support rotatable with the gear and axially displaceable from an open position to a closed position. Each of the cylinder housings includes a target sensed by a sensor when the neck ring holder support is at the closed position. Each of the targets is configured so as to be sensed by the associated sensor for a selected angular range when the neck ring holder support is at the closed position. The angle of displacement of the neck ring holder supports when the sensors sense the associated target are determined so that the condition of the pneumatic cylinder can be evaluated and so that offsets can be defined for variations between actual and programmed angles for event occurrences.

    • A blow mold assembly for an I.S. machine for blowing a parison of glass and cooling the blown parison into a formed bottle which can be removed from the blow mold. A blow head is lowered onto a blow mold and final air is applied. The blow head is lifted a selected vertical distance above the top surface of the blow mold to an exhaust position allowing cooling air to escape from the blow mold. The selected vertical distance is selected so that at least a minimum pressure will continue within the formed bottle. The blow head is maintain at the exhaust position for a predetermined time and then retracted. A first pressure is applied while the blow head is at the lowered position and a higher pressure is applied while the blow head is at the escape position.

    • An invert and neck ring holder mechanism for displacing a parison from a blank station to a blow station. The invert and neck ring holder mechanism has an opposed pair of side brackets, a worm gear housing supporting a worm gear, and a motor/worm housing for supporting the worm gear housing intermediate the opposed side brackets. The invert and neck ring holder mechanism also has a pair of cylinder assemblies extending between the sides of the worm gear and the side brackets. The cylinder assemblies include a cylinder having an in support. Each cylinder is axially displaceable from a first location adjacent the worm gear to a second location adjacent the associated side bracket and rotationally displaceable to displace its neck ring holder support from a first position at the blank station to a second position at the blow station. A first switch indicates that said first cylinder assembly cylinder is proximate its associated side bracket, a second switch indicates that the first cylinder assembly neck ring holder support is at the first position, a third switch indicates that the second cylinder assembly cylinder is proximate its associated side bracket, and a fourth switch indicates that the second cylinder assembly neck ring holder support is at the second position.
