    • A hand scanner according to the invention may obtain an image of the hand and fingers including the bracelet crease/carpel delta area and palm surface regions up to the tips of the fingers using ultrasound measurement techniques. A hand scanner according to the invention may include a movable arcuate platen and an energy transducer. In a method according to the invention, the transducer may be moved back and forth while moving a platen surface in order to advance the hand and thereby produce a raster type scan image. In this manner, the image of the hand print may be collected as a raster image representative of the scanned surface of the friction ridge skin.

    • An unsealed optical encoder does not function properly in a fluid other than air because the optics do not function when interfaced with a medium having an index of refraction significantly higher than air. The collimating lens of an optical encoder has two refracting surfaces, at least one of the refracting surfaces being convex. An orthogonal cap of the present invention is attached over an optical encoder's collimating lens to create a sealed air cavity between the convex refracting surface of the collimating lens and the orthogonal cap. This placement of the orthogonal cap is such that the collimated light leaving the sealed air cavity may enter the surrounding medium at an angle that is normal to the surface of the medium, such as transparent oil, so that the collimated light does not bend even though the light is traveling from air to a much slower medium.

    • A finger imaging system having a linear actuator, a pivot arm mounted to the linear actuator and an energy transducer mounted to the pivot arm is disclosed. The system may include an arcuate platen positioned to receive energy from the transducer. A finger may be placed on the platen, and the position of the transducer may be fixed at a first position relative to the length of the finger. The pivot arm may be moved in order to move the transducer along an arcuate path while maintaining the transducer at the first position relative to the length. As the transducer moves along the arcuate path, energy may be emitted from the transducer and reflected from the finger. The reflected energy may be detected and data corresponding to the amount of time between sending and receiving energy may be stored as data along with the linear and angular position of the transducer. After data is gathered about the finger at the first position, the transducer may be moved to a second position relative to the length of the finger, where the process of sweeping the transducer along an arcuate path and gathering data may occur again. The stored data can be used to create an image of the fingerprint.

    • A system including a mobile or portable fingerprint scanner and one or more docking stations adapted to operatively receive the scanner. The scanner can be hand carried to various locations for obtaining fingerprint images and other information such as images from bar code scanning. The scanner is battery operated and has the capacity of storing a number of such images. The docking station is in the form of a receptacle into which the scanner is inserted after obtaining one or more images. While the scanner is operatively received in the docking station, the image(s) stored in the scanner are downloaded via a connection to a personal computer or the like, the scanner battery is recharged and the docking station performs various diagnostic operations on the scanner before it is withdrawn from the docking station for further use. In a typical law enforcement situation, the docking station is located within the law enforcement vehicle and the scanner can be used by law enforcement personnel at locations remote from the vehicle. In a typical security situation, a single scanner is carried by the security officer and a docking station is located at each checkpoint or location where the officer is to perform an inspection. Each bay station has a unique identification and there is bidirectional exchange of information between the scanner and the bay station so that the identity of the security officer can be confirmed and a record of the inspections is made which can be monitored at any time.

    • An ultrasonic imaging system and method for imaging human or animal tissue having a surface and including a probe including a platen for supporting the human or animal tissue for imaging the same, a transducer positioned closely adjacent the supporting means for providing an output ultrasonic beam directed on the surface so that the size of the beam at its focal point is as small as possible to maximize the resolution of the system and a mechanism for moving the transducer in two directions so as to provide a two dimensional scan of the surface by the ultrasonic beam. There is also provided a scan controller operatively connected to the probe for controlling the mechanism to provide the scan of the surface and a signal processor operatively connected to the probe for receiving signals produced in response to the scan of the surface and for processing the signals. In a form of mechanism wherein an oscillatory motor moves the transducer to direct the ultrasonic beam along an arcuate path, there is provided an encoder operatively associated with the motor for providing information on the amount of angular rotation provided by the motor. There is also provided an oscillatory flexible liquid impervious seal between the motor shaft and a liquid filled region containing the transducer in a manner causing minimal drag on the motor. The system and method can be employed in fingerprint scanning and processing, and in biometric identification and verification systems wherein the imaging system is utilized in combination with a record member containing a recorded biometric image and a processor for performing comparisons.

    • The invention relates to a fingerprint scanning system and a method of scanning a fingerprint. A system according to the invention may have (a) an imaging surface capable of receiving a finger, (b) a rotatable disk, the disk having a pivot-location about which the disk rotates, (c) an ultrasound transducer joined to the disk and capable of providing information corresponding to a fingerprint of the finger, (d) a disk driver capable of rotating the disk in order to cause the transducer to move along a substantially circular path, (e) a linear driver capable of moving the pivot-location linearly, (f) a measurer capable of measuring linear positions of the pivot-location and arcuate positions of the transducer; and (g) a coupler capable of producing sets of coupled information, each set comprising one linear position of the pivot-location, one arcuate position of the transducer and information produced from the transducer at the pivot-location and arcuate position.
