    • A digital communications system for delivering data blocks includes at least one transmit/receive unit (TRU). The TRU includes a storage element for receiving transmit data packets and retransmit data packets from a sending unit and a processing element communicatively coupled to the storage element. The processing element is configured for recognizing a failure to receive at least one other transmit data packet (missing data packet) from the sending unit, and for configuring a status control packet for transmission to the sending unit, the control packet includes a header including a next packet identifier for a next data packet anticipated to be received and a status payload portion including a missing packet identifier including the transmit packet identifier for the missing data packet. In the system, the retransmit data packet includes at least a segment of the data payload in the missing data packet associated with the missing packet identifier.

    • Systems and methods for reduction of handover latencies in wireless communication systems are described herein. Some illustrative embodiments include a wireless mobile communication device that includes a wireless transceiver including a transmitter configured to transmit a first signal synchronized for reception by a first cellular node, and processing logic that couples to the wireless transceiver. Before the wireless transceiver receives a handover command the processing logic causes the transmitter to transmit a second signal for reception by a second cellular node to request allocation of an upload resource for communication with the second cellular node as part of an impending handover.

    • A novel and useful synchronization mechanism that functions to provide a uniform time base for mesh points in a WLAN mesh based network. The invention enables timing synchronization to a common reference clock base by advertising the common TSF within beacon transmissions. All MPs in a mesh share a common DTIM interval. The synchronization mechanism enables the mesh points to avoid collisions in the generation and transmission of beacons. The TBTT offsets of the current MP and its neighbors are advertised in beacons so that neighboring MPs that hear the beacons can select non-overlapping TBTT offsets. Each MP receives one or more beacons from its neighbors and compares the timing of its neighbors to that of itself and adopts the highest TSF (i.e. the fastest) in the mesh. Eventually, all MPs in the mesh will adjust their timing to that of the MP with the fastest clock. The reception of beacons by MPs from its neighbors is also advertised. This allows for MPs to verify that the beacons they send are actually heard and are not in collision with beacon transmissions of other MPs.
