    • The disk includes a disk recording surface, and the ramp includes a ramp. A head stack assembly of a hard disk drive includes an actuator arm and a suspension assembly attached to the actuator arm. The suspension assembly includes a first elongated region having a distal region and a planar surface for facing toward the disk recording surface; the first elongated region defines a longitudinal axis. The suspension assembly includes a second elongated region positioned adjacent to the distal region. The second elongated region includes a lift tab for engaging the ramp surface and is vertically offset from the planar surface such that the lift tab is vertically displaced further from the disk recording surface than the planar surface. The second elongated region further includes a curved lift tab supporting member for supporting the lift tab and positioned between the distal region and the lift tab. The lift tab supporting member includes a first region integrally formed with the distal region, a second region integrally formed with the lift tab, and a third region positioned between the first and second regions such that the second region is vertically offset from the first region. The third region defines a first trough for stiffening the supporting member. The distal region and the first region define a second trough for stiffening the distal and first regions. The second trough extends along the direction of the longitudinal axis and has an outer surface for facing toward the disk recording surface, the outer surface being vertically displaced closer toward the disk recording surface than the planar surface.

    • A disk drive includes a ramp having a fixed portion that is fixed to the disk drive base, and a guide portion that is not. The guide portion includes a guide surface having a parking region that is in contact with an HGA lift-tab with the disk drive in a non-operational state. The guide surface also has a load/unload region that extends over a disk outer periphery. The guide surface defines a guide surface length that is measured from the parking region to the load/unload region. The ramp also includes a torsionally-compliant member connecting the fixed portion to the guide portion. A distance between the torsionally-compliant member and the parking region, measured approximately parallel to the guide surface length, is less than half the guide surface length. The guide portion is not connected to the fixed portion over at least two-thirds of the guide surface length.

    • A head disk assembly includes a disk, a head stack assembly and a ramp-defining structure. The disk has a recording surface surrounded by an outer circumference and the head stack assembly has an actuator pivot axis and a head gimbal assembly. The head gimbal assembly includes a gimbal defining a gimbal axis parallel to and spaced a first distance from the actuator pivot axis, and a lift tab having a lift-surface portion spaced a second, larger distance from the actuator pivot axis. The ramp-defining structure includes a wall extending parallel to the actuator pivot axis, an axis-defining portion defining a retraction pivot axis and a shelf projecting from the wall to define a bearing surface against which the lift-surface portion slides during unloading and loading operations. The bearing surface has a meandering and undulating shape to define a retention portion and a cam portion, the retention portion defining an arc relative to the retraction pivot axis, and the cam portion defining an arc elative to the actuator pivot axis. The ramp-defining structure is releasably secured relative to the disk such that in a secured condition the cam portion overlies the outer circumference and in an unsecured condition the cam portion can be moved to a position clear of the disk while the lift-surface portion slides on the retention portion.
