    • A housing for cold rolling mills of the cluster type. The housing comprises two heavy side frames, and upper and lower transverse slabs which serve to back the casters of the mill, and thus the intermediate roll and the workrolls. The transverse slabs are oppositely tapered from the middle, being thickest at the center and becoming thinner toward both the front and rear sides of the mill, whereby the combined effect of the side frame deflection and slab deflections measured at the workroll is substantially constant along the entire operating length of the workroll. The result is a housing wherein metal may be rolled with zero crown.

    • This application discloses an improvement in planetary rolling mills, making possible a rolling of flat strip, free from scallop, without the need for a planishing mill to smooth out the scallops which are normally produced by a planetary mill. There is also disclosed how the angle of entry of the work rolls into the slab may be reduced, thus reducing the likelihood of surface defects, or alternatively, making it possible to roll thicker slabs than was possible heretofore on a given size planetary mill. The disclosure teaches that as a particular work roll enters the roll bite, its diametrically opposite work roll engages a cam. The cam has a surface corresponding generally to the circular orbit of the work roll, but is modified so as to deviate from such orbit by a very small amount. An initial deviation may cause the work roll diametrically opposite the rolls which are in engagement with the cam to engage the slab at a more acute angle to the passline, and a final deviation may cause the work rolls which are diametrically opposite rolls in contact with the cam, to follow a path parallel to the passline as they leave the roll bite.

    • A cyclic operating rolling mill wherein one or more working rolls of small diameter, operating on one or both sides of the workpiece, are disposed between the workpiece and rigid housing beams, and are reciprocated along an inclined path by means of a drive plate to produce the reduction. The drive plate drives the work rolls by frictional contact along the same generator which transmits the roll-separating force to said rigid-housing beams. The workpiece is independently fed into the mill, and means are provided to obviate a scalloped condition of the finished workpiece. With a plurality of work rolls a rotation thereof of less than 180* creates an overlap in the rolling paths of the work rolls so that the portions of the work rolls which never contact the driving plate may be given a desired configuration other than cylindrical.
