    • A piston vacuum pump comprises a cylinder (14) and a piston (12) that forms a compression chamber (28) with the cylinder (14). The piston (12) oscillates in the cylinder (14) with a compression stroke and an intake stroke. In a side wall (16) of the cylinder (14), a gas inlet (30) is provided, the gas inlet (30) being closed by the piston (12) at the beginning of the intake stroke and open at the end of the intake stroke. Further, an equalizing conduit and a valve are provided through which gas from the gas inlet (30) flows into the compression chamber (28) at the beginning of the intake stroke. This provides a simple arrangement of an equalizing conduit with a valve. The piston substantially forms the equalizing conduit and the valve. Thereby, the valve can act in the region of the piston end wall so that the dead volume is minimized.

    • A reciprocating piston drive mechanism, especially for a reciprocating piston vacuum pump, includes a cylinder (3) embodied in a housing (12). A piston (4) is moved back and forth in the cylinder by an electromagnetic drive that has an electromagnet (11) on the stator side and at least one permanent magnet (18, 19) on the piston side. In order to increase service life of said drive mechanism, permanent magnets (15, 16) are also provided on the stator side. The piston permanent magnet(s) (18, 19) and the stator permanent magnets (15, 16) are configured and disposed in such a way that the piston (4) is magnetically biased to a substantially central axial position in the idle state.

To provide a vacuum pump which has a configuration having a simple construction and which is effective with regard to cooling power, it is proposed that the body (20) is in addition secured in a separate cover part (15) mounted on the suction-side end of the displacement body (12, 13), and that the free space is formed, at least in part, directly between the body (20) and the inner surface of the displacement body (12, 13) and extends continuously from the cover part (15) to a securing region of the body (20) in the displacement body shaft (2, 3), in a region of the displacement body shaft (2, 3) associated with the motor/gearing housing (4) of the displacement body shaft (2, 3).

Negative influences on the delivery rate of the pump are reduced by a can (34) which delimits the recess (12) peripherally or by controlling the current supply to the coils, such that only one coil conducts current at a time.
