    • A storage device and method for updating a shadow master boot record (MBR) are provided. In one embodiment, a storage device is provided having a memory with a first storage area and a second storage area. The storage device receives updated sectors of the shadow MBR from a host device and writes the updated sectors in the second storage area. The storage device determines a highest written sector in the first storage area that is occupied by the shadow MBR. The storage device copies the non-updated sectors of the shadow MBR from the first storage area to the second storage area, wherein only the non-updated sectors up to the highest written sector are copied. Accordingly, any non-updated sectors above the highest written sector are not copied from the first storage area to the second storage area. The storage device then designates the second storage area as storing a current version of the shadow MBR.

    • A novel apparatus for and a method of optimized data transmission whereby an input data stream is distributed over a plurality of physical channels within a logical channel group. Transmission of data over the channel group appears as transmission over a single logical channel having a bandwidth approximately equal to the sum of the physical channel bandwidths. The physical channels making up the logical channel group may have different bandwidth capacities. The method of data unit distribution among a plurality of physical channels generates several transmission plans for scheduling data units, which may have difference lengths, over the physical channels where the data stream is composed of data units from different sessions. A best plan according to one or more optimization criteria is selected and used for distribution of the data units. The original order of transmission of the data units can be reproduced for each data session at the receiving side without the need for additional fields or modification of existing fields of the data units.

The invention comprises a method of data unit distribution among a plurality of physical channels including the consideration of the bandwidth capacities of the individual physical channels in implementing the distribution algorithm, and the capability of reproducing the order of the transmission of the data units on the receiving side without the need for additional fields or modification of existing fields of the data units. The method of the present invention performs an algorithm whereby the transmitter and the receiver only need to decide to transmit/receive a data unit using the current channel or to switch to the next channel in the channel pool (i.e. the channel group). This decision is made considering the value of a bandwidth parameter and current ‘credit’ counter associated with each channel.
