    • A previously unknown wireless device, which may be either an access point or a station, is detected by receipt of transmissions from that device at one or more access points that are currently operating within a managed wireless network. A graphic representation of the newly detected device is displayed in a region of a user interface external to a region containing a representation of the physical environment of the managed wireless network. A user selects a number of known access points from which an estimated distance to the newly detected device is to be determined and represented. A representation is generated of an estimated distance from each one of the selected number of access points, such as those access points that are estimated to be physically closest to the newly detected device, for example on the asis of signal strength with regard to transmissions from the newly detected device received at the known access points. The distance representations from the known access points may be provided using substantially circular “distance rings”, displayed in the region of the user interface containing a representation of the physical environment in which the wireless network is deployed. The distance rings enable a user to may observe one or more distance ring intersections indicating one or more potential positions within the wireless network's physical environment at which the newly detected device may be located.

    • A system for providing automatically populated display regions showing discovered access points and stations in a user interface representing a wireless communication network deployed in a physical environment. A generated user interface includes a first display region in which access point representations are displayed as corresponding access points are automatically discovered within the wireless network, and a second display region in which station representations are displayed as corresponding stations are automatically discovered within the wireless network. The first and second display regions are provided external to another display region, referred to as the “physical space” display region, in which is shown a representation of the physical space in which the wireless network is deployed. As the access point and station representations appear in the first display region and second display region, the user can manipulate them, for example by drag and drop operations using a computer mouse, in order to place them appropriately in the physical space display region. In response, the disclosed system superimposes the access point and station representations over the physical space representation. The access point and station representations can subsequently be similarly repositioned by the user within the physical space representation.

    • A system and method for graphically representing associations between wireless network devices in a way that visually indicates the maximum amount of throughput between the associated devices, as well as a channel that is currently selected for communications between the associated devices. The thickness of a line between the associated devices may indicate the maximum throughput between the devices, whereas the color of the line may indicate the channel on which the associated devices are currently communicating. Other visual characteristics of lines generated between associated devices may be used to visually represent maximum possible throughput and current channel selection. Associations between the devices in the wireless network may be determined by checking a list of associated stations maintained in each access point.

    • A system and method for generating display objects representing areas of radio coverage, available bandwidth and channel selection for wireless devices in a wireless communication network are disclosed. Substantially circular rings are provided defining areas of radio coverage for corresponding wireless network devices. The rings are super-imposed over a representation of the physical environment in which the wireless network is deployed. The thickness of the generated rings is representative of the amount of throughput available within the rings. A relatively thicker ring indicates that throughput within the ring is relatively high, while a relatively thin ring indicates that throughput within the ring is relatively low. The rings are further indicative of the current radio channel selected for operation by the associated device. Different colors may be associated with different channels, so that all devices using the same channel have the same color rings. Other visual indications may alternatively be used to indicate the channels associated with the generated rings. The disclosed system is especially advantageous in managing wireless communication networks in which wireless network devices dynamically adjust operational parameters such as transmission power and channel selection.
