    • A personal environment appliance and a vent for a personal environment appliance are provided. The appliance includes at least one thermoelectric module over at least one inlet port. The appliance further includes at least one main outlet port spaced from the at least one inlet port and at least one waste outlet port spaced from the at least one inlet port. The appliance further includes at least one filter between the at least one inlet port and the at least one thermoelectric module. The vent includes a plurality of first tubular conduits generally parallel to one another and each first tubular conduit having a ratio of the length divided by the width, The vent further includes a plurality of second tubular conduits generally parallel to one another and having a ratio of the length divided by the width. The plurality of second tubular conduits generally surrounds the plurality of first tubular conduits. The ratios of the second tubular conduits are sufficiently large such that air flow from the second tubular conduits is substantially laminar.

    • A gas damped acceleration switch for use as a vehicle crash-sensing device. A mass is supported for movement along an axis against a spring, the mass actuating a switch only after moving a predetermined distance against the spring by an accelerating force. A gas damping system makes the device sensitive to the duration as well as the magnitude of the velocity change. Damping is provided by a plate movable with the mass having surfaces that are perpendicular to the axis of motion. The plate is normally pressed against a mating surface to exclude air. A seal is formed between the mating surfaces around the periphery so that a partial vacuum is formed as the mass moves the surfaces apart. When the surfaces move apart a predetermined distance, the seal is broken and the pressure equalizes. However, the moving plate still produces viscous damping as a function of velocity as it continues to be moved through the air by acceleration of the mass against the spring.

    • Apparatus and method are provided for actuating a passenger restraint system in a passenger vehicle. A sensor, such as an accelerometer, provides a vehicle condition signal indicative of a potential deployment condition suitable for actuating the restraint system. A first signal is provided so long as the value of the condition signal exceeds that of a first threshold level. An integrator is operative in response to the first signal for integrating the condition signal and providing an integrated signal. The integrator is normally operative to be reset upon termination of the first signal. A trigger signal is provided for actuating the restraint system when the value of the integrated signal exceeds that of a second threshold level. The integrator is prevented from being reset upon termination of the first signal once the first signal has had a time duration of at least time period T1. The integrator is reset after a time period T2 has taken place, wherein T2 had a duration greater than that of time period T1. Consequently, the integrator continues to integrate the condition signal during the interval between the termination of time period T1 and the termination of time period T2, even though the value of the condition signal drops below that of the first threshold level during the interval.

    • In certain embodiments, a thermoelectric heat pump includes a heat transfer region having an array of thermoelectric modules, a waste channel in substantial thermal communication with a high temperature portion of the heat transfer region, and a main channel in substantial thermal communication with a low temperature portion of the heat transfer region. An enclosure wall provides a barrier between fluid in the waste channel and fluid in the main channel throughout the interior of the thermoelectric heat pump. In some embodiments, the waste fluid channel and the main fluid channel are positioned and shaped such that differences in temperature between fluids disposed near opposite sides of the enclosure wall are substantially decreased or minimized at corresponding positions along the channels.
