    • A system and method for a pre-print, three-dimensional virtual rendering of a print piece is disclosed. A plurality of modular/pipelined architectural layers are managed, operated, and organized by a controller. A product definition is provided to a job ticket adaptation layer where it is transformed into a physical model. The physical model is then transformed into a display model via the product model layer. The display model is transformed into a scene that can be displayed on a graphical user interface as a three dimensional virtual rendering by a rendering layer, where the rendering includes one or more binding elements to satisfy the product definition. The modularity further enables different product description formats to be supported by only altering the job ticket adaption layer, and that different graphics rendering engines can be supported by altering only the rendering layer.

    • Disclosed are embodiments of a color management system and an associated method that display a visual representation of a digital version of a document and further annotate selected object(s) in the visual representation with corresponding statement(s) containing a natural language description of any color differences between the selected object and the same object in a different digital version of the same document. For example, a visual representation of the print-preview version of a document can be displayed and a selected object within the visual representation can be annotated with a statement containing a natural language description of any color differences between the selected object and the same object in the selected-for-print-preview version of the document. By annotating selected object(s) on the display in this manner, the embodiments provide an accurate indication of color variations between the two versions even in a non-calibrated and/or non-optimal viewing environment.

    • The system for selecting a best device for rendering a color document involves first determining the types of color data included in the color document to be printed. Once the type of color data has been determined, the color characteristics are matched against the strengths of the available output devices to obtain a list of devices best suited for this particular color print job. At least one device from the list of best devices is selected and the color document is rendered onto the selected device. Preferably, the types of color data involved are determined by the mix of defined colorimetry and undefined colorimetry in the color document. Alternatively, the types of color data are determined by analyzing the colorspaces in the document (i.e., RGB, CMYK, LAB, XYZ, etc.), and the embedded profiles, if any, in the document (e.g., sRGB, SWOPCMYK, Euroscale). In the instance wherein a number of devices match the criteria for selection, only those devices which honor embedded color profiles are selected for documents containing embedded profiles. Alternatively, only those devices are selected that produce a consistent rendering across multiple color spaces and profiles for documents with a mix of color spaces and profiles. Selecting the best device may also depend on whether the type of print job is considered to be Job-Balancing or Job-Splitting. With Job-Balancing, at least one of the metrics is used: (i) Intersection Gamut Volume, (ii) Gamut Similarity, or (iii) Mismatch Between Document Colors and Intersection Gamut for device selection. With Job-Splitting, at least one of these metrics are used: (i) Individual Gamut Volume, or (ii) Mismatch Between Document Colors and Device Gamut. Colorimetric definition of the selected colors can be retrieved from either an embedded source profile or by default and mapping the colors to the output gamut.

    • A system and method for pre-print visualization of a job to be printed are described. The method includes submitting the content of the printing job, and associated printing environment data, in order to create a virtual rendering of the job in 3D on a user interface. In one embodiment, the rendering may be a low-resolution rendering and in another embodiment or later step, the virtual rendering would employ print-quality representations of content. The virtual rendering further allows a user to observe job-specific aspects and change a point of view relative to the rendering, including selecting and viewing individual pages of the print job. The method and system may be employed to facilitate obtaining user approval for production of the print job before forwarding the job for production.
